The Nations from JoWooD has arrived on GOG.com and all this week we’re celebrating its release by giving you a juicy 50% discount on the Alien Nations. It's just $8.98 for both games! Check out the promo page for details!
The Nations is a strategy game, focused on managing a civilization, rather than engaging in combat, much like the Settlers series. As such, your primary task will be to expand the rudimentary settlement you started with, assign tasks to your people and tend to their needs. The campaigns are non-linear, meaning you can fulfill a mission's goals in different ways, be it through diplomacy, economic growth or war... Or a mixture of those. The game features three races, each with a different style and set of priorities, plus each unit is essentially an individual, having their own avatar and name, creating a connection between the player and their Nation.
I know i ask this every time when a Strategy/RTS game is released but can anyone give me a newbie difficulty rating (1-5, 1 being hardest) for both these games as i am quite interested in these, especially since you can complete objectives without fighting.

Has the music been fixed yet for Alien Nations? And does it work in The Nations? If so I might be interested in picking it up. Well atleast the soundtrack is there, so it is possible to play the music through media player while running the game, but I would prefer to have it directly in the game.
I have enjoyed Alien Nations, so I'll get this one too.
Why do these two games remind me so much of The Settlers IV (another game I would so dearly see get the GOG treatment, by the by)?
May have to take advantage of the promo if I can find the money -- I've already spent a little too much on games this month!
Great, purchased! I always wanted to get Alien Nations, and now I had no excuse to not buy it.
I was wondering on the promo discount, until I read the game page, this game is: Alien Nations 2.
I'm not familiar with either, but they look/sound like fun.

I have only played The Nations personally. I would rate it about a 3 most of the time. There are some things in the game that are harder to accomplish, but overall it is a very fun game if you are more of a gamer that likes to build up a town, gather resources (before others take them), build all sorts of buildings and send many people to school, etc., etc., etc..
I have been waiting for the The Nations but I will only be buy it not the older Alien Nations. I will still save myself some money and have the better of the two games.

Unfortunately it isn't fixed yet, but if you're willing to spend a few minutes, there's a workaround. The game natively used Audio CD, so if you burn the bonus soundtrack onto an Audio CD (or create an Audio CD image and then mount it) then the game will play music normally. Or you can use any other Audio CD if you wish (right now I'm listening to Vader in the Alien Nations main menu...:P).

It reminds me of the Spongmonkeys.
It reminds me of childhood nightmares
Take a look at the screenshots. There's one of a scientist wanting to work with you and you're being asked if you want HIM to work for you. It's either a typo or a trannie scientist, I don't know, but the latter is funnier than the former.

I never played the Amazons but the women do that level job for them and the men are the carriers. They must only have one text for all races! :o)
