Today you will see a strange message on your computer screen from a mysterious being called the Guardian!

Visit Britannia once more to prove that you are a true champion of the Virtues. GOG.com and EA bring you the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/ultima_7_complete]Complete Ultima 7 to you for only $5.99!

You are the Avatar, summoned once again to Britannia, the fabled land of the monarch Lord British. When you arrive through the Moongate, you meet with your old friend Iolo. An obscene murder has just shook the town of Trinsic. You learn that a new organization, called the Fellowship, has been growing in numbers. As you investigate the mysterious murder and begin uncovering true motivations of the Fellowship, you’re also haunted by ominous warnings of the enigmatic Guardian.
Ultima 7: The Complete Edition features a complete graphical and control overhaul of the Ultima engine. The oldschool top-down Ultima view has been revamped: now the game fills the whole screen and finally you can control the whole game with a mouse. The vast populated world of NPCs with their own life schedules makes exploring the enormous area of Sosaria an engaging and epic adventure. Ultima 7 is distinguished by the total immersion and freedom in exploring and completing the game. You can pick up everything and interact with every nook and cranny out there. To eat, which is needed for survival, you need to get flour and water, mix them on a table in a bakery, than use the the newly created dough on a fireplace to bake bread. If you’re good at it, the baker might just tip you for your effort!
The tactical combat system of earlier Ultima series games has been replaced with a real-time combat system, where the AI is controlling your team and you, the player are only in control of the Avatar. You advance in experience via Ultima’s familiar level up system where once you have earned a sufficient amount of experience points you automatically gain a level.

Ultima 7: The Complete Edition consists of Ultima 7: The Black Gate, Ultima 7: The Forge of Virtue, Ultima 7: Part Two - Serpent Isle, Ultima 7: Part Two - The Silver Seed all in one package for as low as $5.99!
Now all they have to add here is martian Dreams, and the first Dune game!

I remember first seeing the first Dune game on a display model Tandy at my local Radio Shack.

It was beautiful. The game that is, not the Tandy.

Those were the days...

Yeah, Dune 2 was good, but you can find games like it, or recreated versions of it, but the first one was such a strange blend of adventure and strategy, I haven't been able to find a game quite like it.
It seems they got the payment problem fixed. Thanks GOG. Now I'm off to Britannia and a place called The Serpent's Isle...
Bought!

We could end faster if only the two or three people not buying it say so, :P

SimonG: Those were excactly the reasons I never got it to run on a proper DOS machine. I haven't tried it yet, but considering how smooth GOG has made all the other games for me, I'm very hopeful.
I remember I had to hunt down some 3rd party mouse driver that took less memory, and maybe also some replacement for smartdrv with a smaller memory footprint, I don't recall for sure. That was quite a feat in the pre-internet and pre-google time, I guess I got the files from some BBS (bulletin board system) probably.

I don't know what other magicks were involved, but I think QEMM and other 3rd party memory managers (let alone the official EMM386.exe) that usually made the life easier wouldn't work with Ultima 7 because of its own Voodoo memory manager.

Man, the DOS gamers back in the day sure were tough as nails! We ate floppies for breakfast and shit ZIP disks in the afternoon.
Wonderful release, thanks GOG!

ne_zavarj: When will GOG make a " let's ask the developer " interview with Richard Garriott ?
If it happens, please, open it asking "Name" and "Job" :)

elisstar: Also, this game has a few serious bugs, documented here: http://codex.ultimaaiera.com/wiki/Bugs#Ultima_VII
Hopefully this is the CD version which corrected some of the game breaking bugs.
With that many game killing bugs, I'm surprised I was ever even capable of completing the game... I originally played the floppy version, but later bought also the Ultima Collection which includes it too, but I have never played the Collection. I presume and hope it is the CD version in the Collection, and also the GOG version.

Ultima 7 actually reminded me quite a lot of Amiga's "The Faery Tale Adventure" which as bit similar (but still not) action RPG. It was also so full of bugs IIRC that playing it felt like walking on egg shells.

I can´t get this work. Dosbox opens and then shuts down. Any advice?

Go the folder with the game's links in Start Menu and run "Graphic mode setup". Pick a different graphic mode from the current selection. One of them might work better.
In "Graphic mode setup" when I push "Start game" it says "Error game not installed" but it is installed. More ideas? I uninstalled and installed again but same problem.

Run the graphics mode setup from the start menu.
