It arrives!

Syndicate, the classic isometric game where you play to rule the world, lands on GOG.com today for just $5.99!

Played from a top-down isometric view, Syndicate presents the player with a simple goal: world domination. As a “Marketing Director”--or, more accurately, a hitman--for a new syndicate, the player will need to lead a squad of four operatives to infiltrate, capture, search, and destroy their way to the top of the corporate food chain. Critically acclaimed for its gameplay, splashy graphics, and deep customization options, Syndicate is one of those good old titles that every gamer should have on their shelf.

If you're a fan of games, fun, or taking over the world, this is definitely right up your alley, so pick it up now.
Sorry, but no American Revolt, no buy.
I know i'm a spoiled brat, but that is entirely GOG's fault with releases of games like Baldur's Gate with expansions, soundtrack and other goodies.

Another reason why i don't like EA.
so, I've played a demo of Syndicate Wars waaay back and I liked it very much (but it seemed really difficult even in that time, no saving during missions and stuff)

how is the original game different?

Much better :)

spindown: Hm, what a surprisingly lukewarm response to the release of one of the most frequently requested games. Anyway, thank you so much for making this possible, GOG! I'm going to buy the game now...
what else is new. requests are free so everybody makes plenty of them.

when the requested game is released, half the people won't buy it because all of a sudden they're not interested in the game type, they already have it from back in the day, they are supposedly broke (again!!) or they're waiting for customer feedback (yeah, 19 years after launch...).

another third complains about lack of extras, lack of expansions, lack of language support, lack of 64-bit executable, etc.

in the end, it seems like only a third or so actually comes through and purchases the game.
No orgasmic message from Navagon?
Back then I had a lot of fun with Syndicate Wars.

This one looks even better, it seems to have way more freedom of gameplay.

Persuadotron...I think I am going to love this.

Check.

Gibush: From the game page:
"One of very few games to have made it onto almost every “Best Game of All Time” list."

Well, that's pushing it...
In the sense that it's out of context and not even close to being true. Maybe "best classic PC games" lists, and even then, it's not as well known as a game like Deus Ex (at least not nowadays) or other PC classics.
Sorry, I have little to no idea about what Deus Ex is, never played it. Do you think it will be remembered in 20 years? Please be aware original Syndicate was released in 1993 and look at how much hype its sequel generates today, even though it will be an FPS just like every other game nowadays, Deus Ex included (I think). Look at how much anticipation was shown on GOG for the original. This game is legendary.

Believe me, it's one of the best games of all time and Deus Ex does not even compare to it, not by a long shot. Syndicate was a revolution, a game so innovative, beautiful and simply awesome that you just can't forget it. Not even after 19 years have passed since its release.

You might be the first person I've met who doesn't know what Deus Ex is.

"What a shame."

Both were very innovative and original for their time, although Deus Ex hasn't had an huge commercial success. If you haven't even played Deus Ex, how can you even make a comparison, or assure anyone Syndicate is better? I still have a retail copy of both, and while every few years I like to replay Deus Ex, Syndicate gathered dust on my shelf for over 15 years. I digged out the cd just now, played 20 mins, and put it away again for probably another decade.
The gameplay is not bad even by modern standards, and I can get over the very dated graphics, but the controls are awkward enough to discourage me from spending time on it again. Subjective things are subjective.
Ahh! Oh yes! As much as I love the Dungeon Keeper series as well as Populous, Syndicate is by far the best game from Bullfrog. However, the new syndicate game that was announced will not be available in Australia. The OFLC has taken it upon themselves to “protect the Australian children” and not give any digital media an 18+ rating, despite the fact that the average Australian gamer is a thirty year old male. Oops, sorry about that, I almost went into rant there.

not sure if that is what he was trying to say, but he was perfectly right in saying that Syndicate was so good that still today - almost 20 years after its launch - it still generates internet-wide hype, it's still talked about and still has fansites going.

Deus Ex isn't quite as old yet and it remains to be seen if it will have the same presence after 20 years. i think it will.

Lodium: Well, i woud rather buy it than not buying it even withouth extras.
The orginal is hard to come by in perfect condition and if you find it is usally pretty expensive.
avatar
PeterFazekas: Yeah i already bought it before i posted that but still...
Usually they can't include extras(Not expansions but stuff like maps/music/etc) because the ip holders might not own the rights to them but owns the rights to the game, or because the ip holder lost any copies of such materials and GOG staff don't have them as well.(Usually the extras are dug up by GOG staff from their collections and copies they buy from stores, approved for use by the IP holders, and then posted to the site.)

Some also just want the game to come to GOG as more games on GOG equals more pull to get other titles here and the like......and some might have too big a wishlist and/or backlog.

Also 1/2+1/3+1/3=1? Wtf?!? 0.o

No, because they are two completely different genres. The only thing they have in common is probably the dark futuristic setting. Do yourself a favor and go play Deus Ex before comparing it to anything. You might find it is also one of the best games of all time.

In any case, neither game will be remembered in 20 years because we'll all be dead on account of the forthcoming apocalypse. ;P

This, and I have the sneaking suspicion that the expansion issue is what is keeping many people from buying it. Interest in Syndicate was at an all time high before EA came on board, and the issue with EA expansions was not known about at the time. Now, we all come to expect EA games to come in half portions, and it kinda dampens the enthusiasm a little.

And it's not unreasonable to expect that people would have got tired of waiting and went out to buy a secondhand copy somewhere. Cheap they may not be, but you can find a reasonably priced copy that works but is not in mint condition on CD-ROM if you know where to look.

True, but not everyone wants the expansions(doesn't consider them necessary to enjoy base game, has expansion on disk, etc) so I am guessing GOG knew this and released it anyways knowing enough will buy it anyways.

Me? I can always *borrow* said expansions if need be until GOG releases them or buy the expansions off a secondhand site so i'm all good, and the price GOG charges for the base game is well worth it imo so I buy just that for now.
