I don't think so. The only reason that this and Combat Mission have shown up is that Strategy First also has a distribution license for both games. On the Battlefront forums, they've made it clear they will offer no support to anyone buying either product on GOG, and they were rather surprised in both cases that the games were available here.

They are offering a PAYING patch to change the gamersgate version of the game CMSF to the "native" battlefront.com because they say that Paradox won't provide any more patches.
After reading your post though, it makes me wonder if that is the case or not.
After all, Paradox is not known for not patching their games.

Pretty bad way to treat their customers in any case, after all they got royalties from those who bought the game from GamersGate/Paradox originally. Given the state that game was released in, we were basically paying beta testers, and now we have to pay again to get the game we were promised back then? Not that I plan on giving that train wreck of a game any more chances.

How soon?

I'm always saddened when I read about the latest stuff that battlefront.com is pulling about prices, lack of support, and general unfriendliness. I've continually been interested in their games, but their corporate actions and apparent attitude have put me off buying anything from them.
Still, this looks to be an interesting game, but for $9.99 I'd buy something else instead.

While I'm interested in the game and (tbs) strategy games in general and wish to see more of them in GOG I afraid christmas burned giant hole in my wallet and probably can do any serious buying in months to come. There is no serious need either considering huge pile of games I own and have not had time to play yet.
Wishlisted but doubt I buy it in near future unless there is a promo and even if there is, I hope it's not soon as money is always tight for me for the first three months of the year.

I don't know what's going on with BF these days. They seem to have completely lost their minds.

Simple: the original Combat Mission series made them bitter. Very bitter and grasping indeed. Why? Also simple: the CM1 games are big smorgasboards for grognards. There's a lot in them. Lots of units, particularly. This bigness, of course, it one of the reasons the CM1 games are enduring classics.
It was some BF yot announcing that if they could do CM1 all over again, they'd make them much smaller. Why? The crew at BF thinks we, the players, got way too much value for our money. We got too much stuff, and BF doesn't think that's right. Bitter.
Which is why CMSF was released with a handful of units and is constantly being "expanded" for more $$$. Which is also why I haven't bought a BF game since CMAK.

WinSPMBT and WinSPWW2 are way way way larger gamers and still have free versions of them available by the camo workshop. (plus if I may say so, much better games)

So what's generally recognized as the best turn-based war strategy game out right now? I don't mean something like the Combat Mission series...

Armageddon Empires is pretty awesome, but it's futuristic, post-apocalyptic, guerrilla war. Still, a fantastic game on its own right.

It's extremely difficult to even try to answer this question, as there are a lot of fine games of different scale, complexity, timeline etc. I second Crassmaster's suggestion to try Matrixgames. They have a number of experienced developers on board, including SSG (my all time favorite), 2by3 and AGEOD just to name few. Just go to their site, pick some games to your liking and wander around proper forums. It's a very mature and demanding community, so you'll for sure be informed about all cons of each game. The downside is that those games rarely have a demo (you can try reading some AARs instead) and are very expensive, even years after release, so gathering intel is crucial. Good luck!
