It's interesting we get PR after PR2.
the game looks good, though. A question to those who have played both games: if I've spent lots of hours enjoying Port Royale 2 thoroughy, should I pick up this one as well? In what is this game less than its newer version?
Is it like Patrician 3 set in the Carribean?
EDIT: OK, I can check it out myself now: my brother was so kind that he bough me the game, totally surprising me with it.

So what is the verdict? I've played untold hours of Sid Meier's Pirates, every version and on every platform. Is this game more or less like Pirates? It might be an unfair comparison or an apples to oranges kind of thing, I don't know.

It's pretty positive, but there's no mention of Pirates in the similar games list.

There is a very good comparisonin the PR-forum between PR1 and PR2 (thanks to ufo7 for this). Also there are little remarks to Pirates. I already own PR2, but this post makes me very curious to buy PR1.

It's apples to oranges. I love both games to be honest. Sid Meier's Pirates is a pirate sim, this is much more of an economic sim with some pirating in it... but all of the detail and focus of the game is on economic stuff, not on capturing ships and cities and whatnot. To be honest the Port Royale series is very enjoyable, and not very piratey when compared to proper pirate games like Pirates! or Age of Pirates.

Have you played PR1 enough to know whether you prefer PR1 or PR2? I'm curious.

I have played PR for quite some time now. I couldn't decide which one I like more; they are quite similar, yet different enough to not be the same game.
For example, while the core of both games is sailing around in the Carribean, trading with cities and waging war on pirates (and, if you wish, enemies of your friends). However, both parts are different in the two games.
-In PR1, every city has an eclectic selection of goods, from every category of goods. In PR2, every city has a determined composition of good categories (govenor's towns and viceroy's towns: 3 basic supplies+2 manufactured goods, colonial towns: 2 basic supplies, 2 raw materials and 1 colonial good).
-Battle is easier in PR1: you can command 5 ships against the enemy fleet; in PR2, you can command 1 ship against up to 5 hostile ships.
If you're a newcomer to the genre, I'd say start with PR2, as that is, IMO, easier.

Just getting back into this fantastic game after 3 or 4 years. After searching I find that the famenfortune site is gone as is the Ascaron one. Does anyone have any of the good info from either of them? (the riddle section and the info on how to get your hideout from the famenfortune site)
