Only on GOG, a new game release can bring so many memories from back in the days. So who remembers the times of Pentium MMX?

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/pod_gold]POD Gold also known as Planet of Death is a futuristic racer with a plot. The game takes place in the future on a planet called Io. A mining accident unleashes a deadly virus which threatens the whole planet population. After a massive exodus from the planet, only one seat in the very last rescue spaceship remains. This seat will be taken by the winner of a dangerous race in which you're taking part. Maybe it's not an Oscar winning script but come on, it's a racer :) In POD it's all about speed - you drive one of 16 turbocharged machines through 32 tracks in full 3D environment, fighting for the top spot. When released, POD was the first game making use of the Pentium MMX technology, and later on, one of the titles with 3D acceleration. Based on this POD was often used as an example of what the computers in the late 90's could do. Today you can check the "hi-end technology of the 90's" and have fun while blasting 300 mph through the futuristic tracks for only $5.99.
Looks interesting. Maybe I'll get this instead of Forza 4 ;)

Hehe, everyone's talking about getting it with a 3Dfx card which means the later version with hardware rendering support and extra cars.

I played the original version that only supported software rendering on a Pentium MMX. It came with the computer my parents got in 1997 and I thought it was amazing back then (being 9).
Actually I think I remembered wrong, I probably didn't get the game with my 3Dfx card, but I bought it because of the 3Dfx support (which was still quite rare at that point). But Mechwarrior 2 and Whiplash came with it, and what great 3Dfx games they were...

I assume this much because I seem to still have the original POD game box. I don't think any of the games that came with my Voodoo card had any boxes with them, just CDs and maybe manuals. I can't remember for sure.

So has someone tried this version already, and does it get 3D acceleration ok with new systems? Can you select Direct3D and/or 3Dfx with a Glide wrapper?

It might be that some early 3D accelerated games with both Direct3D and 3Dfx support might be actually easier to get run 3D accelerated by using a Glide wrapper, than early Direct3D which may or may not work on some new 3D cards. nGlide wrapper seems to work great for me in a Win7/64bit laptop (have tried it only with Carmageddon 2 so far).

I'm not that interested in this game anymore (played the original quite a lot), but might easily buy it in a promo.

You don't need a wrapper to run it in Direct3D
What wrapper are you using ?
Oh yesss!!!
One of my favorites.
Nice game. I was waiting for this.
Thank you GOG! :D

I didn't mean that Direct3D would need a Glide wrapper (obviously, it is Direct3D, not Glide), but that it appears to me that in some cases it may be easier to get 3Dfx support (with the wrapper) to work instead of trying to get some pre-historic version ofr Direct3D to run correctly on brand new 3D hardware and D3D drivers. Mostly just guessing though, but it is good many early 3D games give you the choice (like if Carmageddon 2 had only Direct3D support, I (and I presume other XP/Win7 users too) would have to play it with keyboard only).

For Glide wrappers, on WinXP I used to use this:

http://www.zeckensack.de/glide/index.html

which worked ok for me, but on Win7/64bit I've now used nGlide, which also seems to work great.

Both seem very straigthforward to use, you just install either one, and after that 3Dfx accelerated games think your system has a proper 3Dfx Voodoo card. :)

I don't know why, but now all GoG forum links seem to link to the forum discussion? In order to see them, you'll have to copy paste them manually to your web browser.

GoG, what's up with that?

Thx a lot

When I put mouse pointer over the link, I see it is pointing to http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/new_release_pod_gold/page1, not to the actual youtube video. I can see the youtube video by copy pasting the link text manually to the web browser.

If only some see this issue, apparently it is some web browser issue. Still using ancient IE8 on this XP machine.

I haven't tried it, but I presume these two Glide wrappers are primarily (or only) for Win9x games with 3Dfx support. I remember hearing that DOSBox would have (integrated?) Glide wrapper for the DOS games which had 3Dfx support (the few that there are, I remember mostly Tomb Raider 1 (with the 3Dfx patch), Whiplash, and a few others).

EDIT: See this:
