DavidGil: I understand, Rising. I've never played the game before and as I said, I'm not even past the first chapter or close I think. So, I really don't know what to expect later. But I just know so far, the atmosphere is pretty good. For me, anyway. (I can imagine it not being as good on later playthroughs though, unless it's possible to see different scenes and such)
I think everything's pretty much a love and hate thing though? Take some of the most loved television series or movies etc. and I'm sure someone will dislike them. Take The Wire for example, I think that's some of the best television one can watch, yet a family member just won't give it a try because he can't get past the street talk.
Though sure, I guess the people who dislike the game could outnumber the ones that do. Still applies though in my opinion.

not to change the subject, but "Rome" is clearly better than "The Wire". :D i just had to.

Maybe because people at these boards use to praise nostalgia over everything else. You know, the same that happens with ZX Spectrum games, that nowadays you talk to people and it seems that all of them were masterpieces without exception.
Play it, though. Amityville all around with z-movie shock value that is valuable for people like me :D

Daventry: No other game up that point had production values that were quite as high.

Are you sure of that? There had been lots of FMV games already, like ICOM games...
EDIT3: and anyway, this one and Myst are personal choices for being the BAD examples that brough a dark era to adventure games...

Daventry: Flash back to the era surrounding this games release and you may better understand why so many people have fond memories of it despite it's flaws. For me personally, I was one of the millions who had grown up with the King's Quest series. Just the right age at the right time to witness the release of masterpieces like King's Quest 5 and King's Quest 6. These games were amazing works of art

i approve this message. that paragraph itself made me feel nostalgic.
I think Tex Murphy and Beast Within easily beat Phantasmagoria production-value wise. Under A Killing Moon had proper actors as well! James Earl Jones as God to name just one! This game just had the biggest hype, let's face it. Roberta Williams was a real known name in the US although she wasn't nearly as popular outside of the US. In fact, many of her games received a right kicking in European reviews for being way too hard and unfair.

Michagogi23: you seem to be the only one on these forums who seems to have some sort of vendetta against this game. according the 53 reviews (at 19:44 pm) the game has 4 star average. so so far the majority seems to disagree with you. and not only that, there are far worse games on gog based on ratings than this, but you dont see me on there complaining about it. the games that i dont enjoy, i dont go on the forum and try to preach how bad the game is.
i think we can all agree that this game is better than simon 3d lol :P

Yes but I do not know if you have noticed but most GOGs, even those with 60 metascores get high ratings here. Its because of the 'hardcore fans' those that post on every game article, everything GOG does with 'GOG is the best and can do no wrong', it is likely these 'hardcore fans' that likely vote up every game. I know I have not proof, but you can just tell by how they blindly follow.

No one's listening? Are we safe?
Ok. Roberta Williams, despite her name, is maybe the WORSE game designer among the wonderful Sierra crew (the Coles, Lorelei Shannon, Josh Mandel, Al Lowe, Jim Walls, Jane Jensen....)

i think you're absolutely right. but as some (ok, 1 or 2) here have suggested that this game shouldn't be on GoG is quite ridiculous based on how many fans it has. just cause i never enjoyed the space quest games im not going to go on that forum and say "omg GoG get rid of this game and if you dont you're not good old games" cause i know that many people love the series and it had an impact on the genre.

Michagogi23: But every game is going to have a niche folowing, thus you open up the arguement that every game ever made should have a place on GOG, as someone somewhere likes that game. The problem with this is that it may bring short term sales, but it dilutes the brand. With to much shovelware people may get stung with to many negative purchases or can no longer be bother navigating it to find a game, this can in the long run lose GOG customer and sales. It is impossible to compare sales lost to sales gained from bad games, but I know from experience I now no longer buy random new games, only those I know I will like due to being stung in the past.

@JacobNZ
again you make a valid point. BUT no one in their right mind can argue that phantasmagoria one of the most well known games ever is shovelware! what are you saying? lol. things like solitaire, big rigs, and prison inmate tycoon is shovelware. hell, even those constructor games, the chess game, all those pinball games released on gog would be considered shovelware before this game. *in arnold schwarzenegger voice* "come on dont b..s.. me"

Jesus, if you don't like a game on GOG then don't buy it. Don't make a federal case out of it each time. Nobody's forcing you at gunpoint to like a game that just came out.

Yeah, it's not like we felt obligated to by Simon 3D, because we knew that was shit.
Thanks for getting this, GOG! I could not get this to run before.

you know what, sometimes i wish i was as good with words as you are. with this simple sentence you've summarized my feelings more than i could in several paragraphs of previous posts.

Agreed. Roberta Williams has also been known to be a real prick.

I think I'll pass on Phantasmagoria. Two reasons: the price and your posts. Also waiting for the Beast Within. I've heard a lot of good things about it...
