So is anybody playing MM Book I and MM2? I know graphics aren't important, but geez the game really hurts the eyes and boggles the mind. I guess I've been too spoilt by the 90s era games where we have journals and spellbooks to keep track of quests and what-not.
MM1 especially was released one year before I was born. I was relatively surprised by the game, because it's been a while since I last played a game that needed you to take notes IRL lol. Pretty cool experience though. The last game I remembered where I needed to take down notes was Darklands.

Exactly! That's what prevents me from playing the game for a prolonged period of time. The White-black contrast is a bit too much for my eyes.
I myself don't mind very dated graphics if they are at least in color.
Heh, Darklands... Man I liked that game. It had some special feeling.

I started both up, just too see how it worked, but I haven't really played them yet. I don't have any problems at all with those kind of graphics though. I even have a large notebook, with both line and grid sheets, reserved for old RPGs requiring such for maps and notes.

I've had a bit of a look at them, started a test party, walked down a couple of corridors, got mashed to bits on the first encounter. Read the manual, learned what I was meant to be doing, started again and had much higher success. Put it away for a bit while I concentrate on the later titles.
I need to assemble/buy/print some grid paper and a few pens for the trusty notepad. I've not needed these for a game in a long time, but I'm kinda waiting to get cracking on it, even just for the nostalgic factor.

Well the two Etrian Odyssey games for the DS are anime style, but they are classic western style dungeon crawler grind-fests. There is also the Dark Spire for the DS, I believe by the same team, and has an option to use wire-frame graphics, similar to the first few might and magic games, and the early wizardry games.

Both Etrian Oddysey games are good but the anime art for the main characters really bothered me, why do the Japanese insist on making the heroes of the land look like 10 year olds? The other problem with Etrian Odyssey is the exploring and mapping is a ton of fun but then once you have mapped out the floor you need to spend the next three hours wandering back and forth grinding. I don't mind grinding but those games got ridiculous especially since what I loved about it and what the game system itself worked so well for was exploration.
Dark Spire was good as well, I really liked the art in that game but it's setting was so generic I just couldn't bring myself to care.
Sometimes I think modern game designers have heard of games like Might and Magic, Wizardry, and Bard's Tale and have seen screen shots but have never actually played them to know why they work and why they were fun.

I also had this on my Vista PC. Right click exe/shortcut and 'run as Administrator' (or set it in compatibility settings). Happens occasionally for some of the DOSbox games.

yeeeah, i love Might and Magic IV and VI, now i'm waiting for M&M 7 and 8. 8th in first please :-)

Perhaps you'd just like it disc-free, but just so ya know MM7 works flawlessly for me in win 7 x64 after installing the community patch, and apparently mm8 works as well (don't have it to test out).

I've had every Might & Magic game released work in Vista with some tweaking here and there, so I don't think it should be too much of a problem.

I buyed game yesterday.9.99 $ for 6 great games is nothing.One of my bets buys in GoG. :)

I can't speak for the person you were responding to... but I know I'd love that! I actually *still* have all of my various MM install media as it's my favorite RPG franchise (Elder Scrolls being a close second... but really it was MM3 that hooked me on CRPGs), but the convenience factor of the GoG releases means I tend to buy the GoG versions of games I already own... I'd love to have a full set of MM 1-9 here.

Ditto. I've purchased several games I own for the convenience of being able to access these from anywhere, anytime and DL and play. Sweet! ;)
