As the last release from the first batch of the huge deal with Electronic Arts, we’re giving you a chance to become a wizard that needs to save the world.

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/magic_carpet]Magic Carpet is an extraordinary action shooter game from the acclaimed Bullfrog Productions. All magic wielders are battling between themselves for the most valuable resource (no, not oil) - mana. Casting huge meteor showers or invoking a terrifying thunder storm, one could summon a castle in the middle of an ocean or just create a volcano right on top of this little harmless village. If you’re not the type of guy that likes to let the hell loose you could always just throw fireballs here and there or just summon a massive skeleton army to plow your way through the plethora of hostile creatures. Apart from other wizards and genies fighting you over the oh so precious mana, you’ll encounter various fantasy monsters ready to devour you (like a hydra or a dragon) or convert mana into more monsters (like the crabs do ;)).

Apart from this awesome flying-carpet action you can slow down a take a look at the normal lives of the townsfolk to admire the normal day to day activities that the AI performs. And if we’re on the subject of AI, the one controlling the opposing wizards is exceptional even when looking from today’s perspective.
If you ever wanted to live the life of a carpet-zooming wizard now you can! Want to do much more than just sing-along “A Whole New World” with the prince and the princess? Then this is the game for you!

skdyer: I hope that the use of that expression wasn't a sly intentional way of indicating that there is no hope of ever getting the expansions and that all you are working on is getting bonus stuff like soundtracks and avatars. Can you clarify?
Alone in the Dark 2 and 3 are bonus content with Alone in the Dark 1... I can see them add the missing expansions as bonus content to the EA games once they\ve worked out the licenses situation. Why not? And I really don't think there's a hidden message or anything in his post.

Galimatias: As mentioned before, due to legal/licensing issues we couldn't provide the bonus content on release, but we're working with EA on it and will do everything we can to bring the EA releases to our top notch standard in terms of goodies.

Cheers!
Ie, the EA games are below standard releases. Maybe GoG thinks it is now large enough that it can throw out one of the professed cornerstones of its success? Yeah, good luck with that.

I'm pretty sure I tried to play this with 3D shutter glasses back in the day. Don't remember the results, but it wasn't good enough to be memorable. Now, Decent 3D, that was memorable with shutter glasses. I wonder if this release supports the newer driver based systems.

They're not below standard, they work well, are fun and are inexpensive. I'm beginning to think that Mr. Gog being so generous was a mistake now that so many people are whining about things as insignificant as them releasing a game without first securing the rights to the expansions.

Is it really that important so as to justify depriving the rest of us of those games on the off chance that someday Mr. Gog is able to secure the licensing? Personally, I don't, and have continued my anti-boycott with Magic Carpet.

I see your anti-boycott and respond to it by not buying Magic Carpet because I'm not interested and am busy with other games.

Take that.

But am rather curious to read more reviews because it might look interesting later maybe.

The anti-boycott is sort of tongue in cheek. I was already going to buy it.

I played it a bit, and it plays pretty well so far, I'm just working out whether it's going to play better with my keyboard and mouse, the way I did originally, or with my game pad. The game hasn't aged well in terms of graphics, but the gameplay is still compelling, which is what most folks around here care about.

It's a DOS release with no 3D acceleration, so I wouldn't have thought it could have supported shutter glasses. It does have anaglyph and stereoscopic 3D modes however.
I've played around with it a bit, and it is as low-res as I remember. Still fun though, especially after you get more spells and progress through the levels. Mouse is a bit touchy, but I'm getting used to it.

Sad thing though, there is a "hi-res" mode that make the graphics look a bit better, (press R) but it really slows down the framerate. A LOT. Guess my GeForce 8800 and Quad Core can't handle it. :-/

Oh well, I can live with low res. At least the reflection, sky, and other graphic options don't slow things down. (Don't turn "soften image" or "speed blur" on though... bleh.)
Heyhey, now that's a real classic! Spend month playing that!

Sadly for GOG - i still own my original cdrom of this game :P

Gremmi: It does, true, but from what I can tell you can't map mouse movements to analogue sticks. Unless I'm being completely blind, anyway.

For some reason DOSBox won't see the 360 controller as anything other than a two button joystick as well (setting it to ch or fcs just makes it claim it's not connected), so not quite as good as xpadder yet.
Yes, unfortunately, you can only map keyboard commands (yet).

And, strange, I use my XBox360 controller as fcs and it works perfectly.

Come on, he didn't say the game was below standard. He said the release was, which is true compared to what we're used to from this site. Of course it's great to have some classic EA games here, but clearly the way they've been released has been at least a bit disappointing. If GOG can get the expansions later, great. But so far it's not clear whether it's ever going to happen due to the licensing snafu.

I think a general boycott is not reasonable, but if people decide for themselves that it's not worth buying a 17 year old game if they're not even getting all the existing game content, then that's perfectly fine in my mind.
The first thing that comes to my mind when looking at this game is: there has to be a mod that expands the viewing distance, isn't it?
GOG Says: You will buy this game and love it!
Silience Worms!

:-p
I'm just having a spot of fun here.
On this whole "no expansion no buy" quotes I see for the EA games, well of course you don't have to buy it, no one is forcing anyone to buy anything. My guess is that the people who won't buy this game or the other EA ones because of no expansions probably weren't very 'hot' on it to begin with anyways (or had them in CD form already)...I think maybe they write about the no expansion sitiuation for they fear that gog will keep releasing games more and more like this. *shrugs of course I cannot read minds so I don't know
Or can I?!
Muahahahaha!
:p
I am having too much fun it is crimminal.
I remember playing the shareware of this. Well, not really playing, because it ran in fast-mo. I think my computer was too fast at the time or something. I definitely might get it here someday.
