Asbeau: It's news to me. Do all GOG games 'call home'?
not sure, but i don't think so.

i'm in two minds about software "calling home" as it's no problem to prevent that. but of course that's no reason to try it without "asking for permission"(including it into the eula isn't the same as asking).
i like the approach of vlc best, they ask while installation if it's ok to "call home". with a nice statement saying they're doing that because they self hate it if every little programm trys connecting to the internet.
low rated
Such a tragically overrated game, with an amazingly underrated sequel. I guess people pretend it's great out of nostalgia. So clunky and dated.
Deus Ex is a magnificent blend of remarkable storytelling, RPG customization, and action-packed shooting. With all GOG.com’s heart we recommend Deus Ex for $9.99 as one of the most captivating and rewarding games ever. EVER!
Yep.

GameRager: I have a question here:

mod install order

Basically I have downloaded kentie's deus exe v4, kentie's deus ex directx 10 launcher, hdtp, new vision, and nyc hell's kitchen map on boct's deus ex thread in the subforum for deux ex. Which should I install first and in what order should I install them?

I have installed the game btw.
Not sure if it is the same with the GoG one, but with my original disc I just put that map in the Maps folder, KDX v4, then KDXDx10 launcher, then HDTP and New Vision.

No problem - the GoG community has helped me countless times, so no thanks required!
Ah ! I was waiting for the GoG version to buy the Goty. I have the first french version on CD, meaning, I need to patch it every time, and apply a No CD etc...
Now I won't need to. And the french subtitles sucks, I won't miss them.
Plus, I wanted the soundtrack ever since Deux Ex 3 came out. Thanks GoG :)

jimthev: These new EULA that GoG is making everyone agree to lately are total crap.

"Without prejudice to paragraph 4 above, we may from time to time during your gameplay collect non-personally identifiable information about your hardware system including how you are using the Software Product. This information may also include your internet protocol (I.P.) address (a numeric number assigned by your internet service provider to identify your PC). This information may be used not only to help you play the game on the Software Product over the Internet (where the Software Product contains Online Features) but also to help us better understand how our customers are using the game, their behaviour and preferences, so that we can improve our computer games and services in the future. This information will not, however, be used to personally identify you without you being aware of it and without your further, separate consent having been given."

Wtf? If you aren't going to do it, don't put it in a license designed explicitly for Deus Ex. If you are going to do this ....

At what cost your soul?

Fred_DM: welcome to the wonderful world of EULAs. what, is this news to you?
Yes it is news to me. GoG started this when they bent over just so they could get EA products to sell but now they've jumped the shark with the new user tracking they are making you agree to. Anything for a buck I guess.

That got forced on them by a French court. Don't think it's used by anything but Witcher 2.

Yes, the EULA kind of sucks, but I'm quite sure they are not actually tracking GOG users. The EULA is just copied & pasted from their modern games, which do track user behavior. They have no interest in knowing how you play a twelve-year old game.

My firewall alerts me anytime a program tries to connect to the internet, and no GOG game has ever attempted to phone home. That includes the EA games, which contain a similar section in their EULA.

this. it's a company EULA, not game-specific. hell, the EA EULA talks about Origin, that tells you how unrelated to the games on GoG the EULAs are.

just click it and forget it. it's what the rest of us have been doing for the past 20 years. old news are old.

Dead Gog,

I am sorry to have the duty to inform you that you are evil. Before all the gog fans rise up in defense of this company, please give me a chance to argue my point.

Gog is not evil in the sense that many other gaming companies are evil. Gog is evil in a (Leland Gaunt) kinda way. Gog always appears to have an item in stock for all the customers that come by the website. That is only the beginning, because that is how gog gets you hooked. At this point, GoG starts offering better and better games (like this for example) and you find that you can't pull yourself from you computer.

After this happens, GoG has you under its control. You will find yourself spend countless nights up alone in front of the computer screen; reliving nostalgic moments of your youth while your children learn to change their own diapers in your absence. Then one day, you'll look up with your blood shot eyes to find your family has moved on, the only food left in the house is a carton of old milk (that doesn't appear to pour anymore for some odd reason) and you find that it doesn't matter, because GoG has just released a new (old) game that you just so happen to "need"

Of course, this is all fiction....but I do sometime hear the calling somewhere in the back of my mind for me to play just another 5 minutes before going to bed....

Helios1337: Glad to see this on here but I already own it twice (retail and steam). I hope Thief is next and fully working because I didn't have any luck when I tried a few months ago.
There's a program called Tafferpatcher that will set up Thief 2 FOR you with high res graphics, HDR lighting, the multi-core fix and lots of cool features. See the top sticky thread.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=83

You can set up Thief Gold and TDP to run most of the same mods Tafferpatcher installs for you (multi-core fix, higher res textures, widescreen mod, but no HDR) you just have to install them manually... and carefully. Be prepared to uninstall and reinstall if you screw up. But once you get it working, it'll suck you in just like it did in 1998.
Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee's song about Deus Ex (made before Human Revolution was announced.) Quite amusing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j8jMn2Kcgs&feature=player_embedded#!

And here is his Deus Ex review ("in preparation" for DE: Human Revo):

I didn't read most of this thread, so if this has been discussed before, I apologise. But having serious trouble to get GOG's XIII to run smoothly on my Vista desktop PC, I read that games based on the Unreal engine are notorious for their poor compatibility and glitchy performance on newer systems. In case I decide to buy Deus Ex, would I have to expect similar issues to the ones my rig has with XIII?
