fisk0: It always was though, unless you bought it on Steam. :)
The original game, like most Unreal engine 1 titles, neither used activation keys nor CD checks.

frankd3: The original game, I still have the disk, has a simple CD check that can be easily defeated by editing the DeusEx.ini file. And this was the same for Unreal. But they will ask for the CD until you make that change. Maybe that was only in the U.S. version.
Could've been an US exclusive, or only for the original (non-GOTY/Gold) releases of the game. I certainly never had to have the CD in the drive after install (I don't even think you needed to run the installer from the disc, you could copy it to the hard drive and go from there) for either Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament 99 GOTY or Deus Ex GOTY.

Yeah, I never bought the GOTY edition only the initial release. But my experience with the original Unreal Tournament was the same as yours.
The CD check was funny because everybody knew how to defeat it the day after it was released.
These new EULA that GoG is making everyone agree to lately are total crap.

"Without prejudice to paragraph 4 above, we may from time to time during your gameplay collect non-personally identifiable information about your hardware system including how you are using the Software Product. This information may also include your internet protocol (I.P.) address (a numeric number assigned by your internet service provider to identify your PC). This information may be used not only to help you play the game on the Software Product over the Internet (where the Software Product contains Online Features) but also to help us better understand how our customers are using the game, their behaviour and preferences, so that we can improve our computer games and services in the future. This information will not, however, be used to personally identify you without you being aware of it and without your further, separate consent having been given."

Wtf? If you aren't going to do it, don't put it in a license designed explicitly for Deus Ex. If you are going to do this ....

At what cost your soul?
I played this for the first time last year. I bought it as part of a double pack. On Steam. In a sale. Your move GoG.

welcome to the wonderful world of EULAs. what, is this news to you?
Bah, I wish I had known about this. Just bought a copy from my local game store before christmas :(
I bought on Steam before but It didn't work quiet right on my computer and I didn't really spend much time trying to tweak it. Might have to buy the GOG version just to have a more user friendly experience playing.
Steam version worked just fine for me. Was even able to use the textures/HD mod.
Let's celebrate the fact that EU embrased ACTA by playing the game which shows so nicely how messed any government can be. Thanks for releasing an another gem.

Fred_DM: welcome to the wonderful world of EULAs. what, is this news to you?
It's news to me. Do all GOG games 'call home'?
I have a question here:

mod install order

Basically I have downloaded kentie's deus exe v4, kentie's deus ex directx 10 launcher, hdtp, new vision, and nyc hell's kitchen map on boct's deus ex thread in the subforum for deux ex. Which should I install first and in what order should I install them?

I have installed the game btw.
Always wanted to play this. So it's an easy buy.

Now...

When can we expect a working version of Gorky 17?
Already own it on Steam and it works fine there. Still though, Deus Ex is a great game.
Fifth copy, second digital, but first one without DRM - I will never stop buying the best game I've ever played.
I love it! Fallout, Planescape Torment, Alpha Centauri and now Deus Ex. It's great to see so many of my favorite titles from what I consider PC gaming's Golden Age on GOG. Two titles I would love to see are System SHock 2 and Vampire: Bloodlines. That's my wishlist!
