A private detective, a superhero, and a museum curator walk into a bar--this isn’t a joke, it’s Anachronox!

Gather a group of unlikely heroes on a quest to discover the who and what and when and why behind a mystery that will destroy the galaxy for only $5.99 from your favorite digital distributor, GOG.com.

Sly Boots is in trouble. Face-beating, out-of-window-throwing, owing-money-to-the-mob trouble. After accepting an unexpected but financially tempting offer, Sly starts a simple cost-effective investigation, which turns out to be a much, much bigger quest than he anticipated. Soon, Sly Boots finds himself in the unenviable position of being the only man in the galaxy who can solve a mystery that threatens to end everything. Well, not quite the only person: Sly has some friends. Mercenary Stiletto Anyway, hotshot scientist Rho Brown, former Museum Curator Grumpos Matavastros, actual superhero Pac Estrella, robotic companion PAL-18, and naturally Sylvester “Sly” Boots together form a most unusual galaxy-saving crowd.
They are the only ones that believe end of days is happening, and you are the only one that can guide them.

Anachronox is charming, intelligent, witty, fun, and entertaining from the very first minute you start until the final lovingly-crafted moments of the engaging story. The game is not simply an RPG: it combines Japanese-style elements (like fairly linear story, cinematic direction, and turn-based non-random battles) with Western-like side quests, dialogues, and sense of humor, mixing in some puzzles and a story straight from an adventure game for good measure. Yes, the game was known to be kind of buggy at launch, but a pair of official patches and a later pair of fan-made patches have taken care of that and you can play it with virtually no issues. The most important thing is that the story flows like an entertaining novel--light-hearted, bizarre, and humorous, but at the same time the gameplay is addictive and challenging.

Minimum system requirements in 2001 included a Pentium II 266, 64 MB of RAM, and a sense of humor, while today they require $5.99 for Anachronox, available now on GOG.com

Tormentfan: This whole post just seems dumb... you would entirely stop playng an otherwise entertaining game for the sake of one mechanic that crops up occasionally?

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
If I'm in a particular mood when trying out a new game, the slightest flaw can make me stop playing it. Especially when nothing up to that point has been entertaining. No need to be a dick about it.

If however I've already started to enjoy a game, and an annoying mechanic pops up, I probably won't have any problems with it.
I know I speak for every man, woman and child on God's green Earth when I say SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

Being a dick about things is what the internet is all about.. it all gets payed forwards.

Anyway, glad to see you going to try again.. but remember sometimes the (initially) annoying things are part of the whole experience.. cut out individual parts and the whole would be diminished.
Anachronox, one of the RPGs I've missed... Thanks, GOG!

Try using the keyboard for the lockpick bit instead of the cursor. You use the arrow keys for up and down and the space bar to try the lock I believe it is. You can also upgrade your pick a little later to get more time.

Way the mechanic works is the coloured bar on the pick handle, if its near the bottom you have the wrong number and quite a way off. Close to the top and you are 1 off either up or down in the number. Just practice on the lock in his office on the door to get used to it, dont try the crate behind the closed door yet as it has 6 tumblers and you only get 10 seconds time, thats where you need the upgraded pick.

True enough. I suffered through Morrowind's combat system, and it's one of my favorite games... But that's rather despite of it, than because of it, heh.
If you have any problems with the game not starting, update your graphic drivers to the current version. Regardless if you have a Radeon or GeForce. Many of the problems with the game are driver related.

There were no problems with this game if the hardware was set up correctly. The rest of the problems was fixed.

Morrowind's combat is attrocious.. but the game taken as a whole, IMHO, is the best 3d game Bethesda has put out... it's (as far as Bethesda goes) an awesome game.

Good to hear such things from the boys in blue. :) Keep up these comments.
This game is something I always wanted to try...like better Mass Effect way before Mass Effect was even being thought about.

I just kinda wish it was running on something like Unreal 3 and not Quake 2 engine, I am so spoiled :(
Yeah! This is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. Well done GOG. But since I already have it on CD...

But why isn't the superb soundtrack included as a bonus?

(Wishing for part 2 and 3...)

Ah, yes. Anachronox. Beyond ugly when it was released, and I believe it's famous for not really having an ending, but it got some great reviews back in its day. Might pick it up.

meho_r: Just to confirm what Merchito said: NVidia GeForce 9500GT here, the game have been working nicely this first half an hour of gameplay.

At the moment, NVidia's official 285.58. Will install the latest, 296.10, in couple of mins and, if anything goes wrong, will let you know.

EDIT: Installed 296.10, no problems so far.

Beyond ugly? Looks better than Deus Ex, bro. They even have different models for different characters instead of mostly using texture swaps. Crazy variety in locations. Lush soundscapes. Tons of details everywhere. Simple lighting, low-poly models, and stretched textures don't ruin incredible art direction.

The writing is pure Lucasarts style adventure game dialog. There's tons of unique minigames and larger game mechanics (like taking photos to solve crimes). Absolutely brilliant game, can't recommend it enough.
