A private detective, a superhero, and a museum curator walk into a bar--this isn’t a joke, it’s Anachronox!

Gather a group of unlikely heroes on a quest to discover the who and what and when and why behind a mystery that will destroy the galaxy for only $5.99 from your favorite digital distributor, GOG.com.

Sly Boots is in trouble. Face-beating, out-of-window-throwing, owing-money-to-the-mob trouble. After accepting an unexpected but financially tempting offer, Sly starts a simple cost-effective investigation, which turns out to be a much, much bigger quest than he anticipated. Soon, Sly Boots finds himself in the unenviable position of being the only man in the galaxy who can solve a mystery that threatens to end everything. Well, not quite the only person: Sly has some friends. Mercenary Stiletto Anyway, hotshot scientist Rho Brown, former Museum Curator Grumpos Matavastros, actual superhero Pac Estrella, robotic companion PAL-18, and naturally Sylvester “Sly” Boots together form a most unusual galaxy-saving crowd.
They are the only ones that believe end of days is happening, and you are the only one that can guide them.

Anachronox is charming, intelligent, witty, fun, and entertaining from the very first minute you start until the final lovingly-crafted moments of the engaging story. The game is not simply an RPG: it combines Japanese-style elements (like fairly linear story, cinematic direction, and turn-based non-random battles) with Western-like side quests, dialogues, and sense of humor, mixing in some puzzles and a story straight from an adventure game for good measure. Yes, the game was known to be kind of buggy at launch, but a pair of official patches and a later pair of fan-made patches have taken care of that and you can play it with virtually no issues. The most important thing is that the story flows like an entertaining novel--light-hearted, bizarre, and humorous, but at the same time the gameplay is addictive and challenging.

Minimum system requirements in 2001 included a Pentium II 266, 64 MB of RAM, and a sense of humor, while today they require $5.99 for Anachronox, available now on GOG.com
I want this but there've been so many good deals lately elsewhere (I've just picked up Sengoku & The Book of Unwritten Tales for the same price as this.) that I don't have the money for any games for the rest of the month now :(. Got lots of games to keep me occupied in the mean time and GOG can definitely have my cash for this one when I have the money next month !

What drivers are you running?

sheepdragon: Mite b cool, but the lockpicking 5 minutes into the game made me uninstall the thing out of sheer hatred of the mechanic the last time I tried it... Is it very necessary to progress?

senbon: If you think of the problem as a binary search problem, it becomes very easy.

EDIT.
Is the game patched to build 46 (1.02)?
This has been answered, yes it's build 46.

This whole post just seems dumb... you would entirely stop playng an otherwise entertaining game for the sake of one mechanic that crops up occasionally?

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

I'm running WHQL drivers from NVidia on my GTX 570 and it is working fine. Version 295.73 currently as I havnt updated to the 296 version released 2 days ago yet, will be doing that tonight as I didnt know they had landed.

Had one crash so far however while doing the Whackmaster training about 20 mins or so in, got anox has stopped responding error. Could be just my system that one though. Will do it again after I get in from getting kids from school and see what happens.

GOG should have anticipated this happening when they targeted an older audience.

Hopefully you cured it with a dose of Anachronox. (Sounds like a drug anyway.)

You're right! I think GoG owes me a complimentary copy of Anachronox for my woes. ...maybe Hitman 2 too...
Let's celebrate this release with a Deus Ex GOG Gem Promo .
Look GOG, we really need to talk. You're killing me here. I can't keep up with you.

Wishlisted for now, will buy when...when I manage. Someday. ;_;
One of the best jRPGs i have ever played.

It makes perfect sense - because if it is a mechanic the player can not get to work, but is essential, it renders the whole game unplayable to him.

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way back inn.

Running on v.280.26 Nvidia drivers (I won't update just yet to the new version, since everything is ok with Anachronox and I don't know if it's the same with the v.296.10).
The card is Geforce GT240
