If I was you I would just buy a prepaid mobile.
I am with Optus, and I spend $30 a topup which lasts me the month anyway, I get $270 of credit all up for that, 100 for calls, 100 for "your optus" which means you can nominate up to three people and call them with that credit, and the rest for text, but the call credit is used once you use up the text. And vice versa.
Nice plan. Plus if you don't use up all the credit and top up before the month is up, all the left over credit stays on etc...

i had prepaid and it cost me on average 50 bucks a month. (three years ago) and i had to worry about buying the cards. too troublesome.
and i need new phone. my razrv3x is getting slow and annoying. (sometimes it turns off by itself)
If the HTC Touch Diamond has the same quality as my HTC Touch Cruise then that'd be a damn good option. There's a dedicated modding community for HTC built gear (http://www.xda-developers.com/) dunno about the Diamond but there's been plenty of interesting mods for the Cruise and my earlier XDA2 which was built by HTC (They make probably a quarter of the phones on the market which are then rebranded)
I have an LG KS20 - the cheapest Windows Mobile touchscreen phone with WLAN I could find at the time (about a year ago). The only reason I have a phone plan is because I wanted unlimited data (while in Sweden, not applicable abroad), the data part is 15 USD a month, and I never top 5 USD in calls and texts unless I'm abroad. It's perfect for me, but then I wanted it more as a pocket computer than a phone (as evident by my choice of plan), also the reason why I didn't get an iPhone - that was at the time like comparing the functionality of a computer to that of a console, less so now but still quite relevant.
Before that I used pre-paid with a Nokia 1100 and never topped $5 a month.
Oh, right... I forget I'm not the typical phone user.
any opinions about this phone

I warn you off the 24 month contracts... My little sister got one, the phone broke and the phone company refused to replace the phone but she still is stuck paying it off.
BEWARE.
I just BUY my phone outright then join a company and prepay. WIN.
-Shiny
-The pink looks oddly nice in the image but would probably look crap in person
-Claims to only support 4GB MicroSD cards which implies its not MicroSDHC capable
-Seems to run a device specific OS rather than something like palm or winmobile so 3rd party software isn't going to be that common
Here's a GSMArena review: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_f480-review-236.php
Suppose it depends what you want to do with it, if its just a phone then anything will do you, if you want to do stuff like play scummvm games and wandering around stealing the internet from poorly secured wireless access points (call it warstrolling) then I'd be going for a windows mobile one

it will be my third 24 months cap. and i am not really a person who will allow to be screwed by company.
if the phone breaks (not my fault. but the phones) then they will not see a single cent till they repair it.
I can go to courts. been there done that.
@alias. yeah...
no-gps is the biggest disadvantage. 5mp camera is great. and it is 3g so i get tv and news.
i don't really need a smart phone.
and the price is awesome 29 cap with 3 months free (and i can change cap to bigger one whenever i want)
damn.
Do NOT buy an iPhone.

yes my lord. as you command :D
a bit of a explanation??
What about the HTC Hero? Do you people in Australia have those? I'm a little spoiled for choice here in the gadget heaven known as Hong Kong, but I'm sure you guys have at least ONE Android phone. Those are nice.

i don't see it anywhere and it would probably be outside my price range.

Isn't everything above 2GB SDHC? Capacity limit could be because of file system limits as well.
