The iPhone is the single most breakdown-prone phone on the market. Recently Nordic insurance companies reported that about 80% of all mobile phone insurance claims were , yes, iPhones. I'm pretty sure the iPhone doesn't have 80% market share.
The glass frame display is very fragile (and the most common fault is this breaking somehow). There's even been reports of the glass literally exploding. Replacing the display is expensive (known as the you-broke-it-too-bad-buy-a-new-one tactic).
The iPhone is also, well, too commercial. It's the new basis for the 14-year-old facebook addict segment.
The HTC Hero is great, vastly superior to the iPhone. I have one.
The king of phones is of course the Blackberry, but it is a tad too expensive.

I'm personally a fanboy of Nokia and the N-Series, having recently acquired a N95 (couldn't afford a N97 at the moment)
They still make the best phones in my opinion.

I have a G1.
if you want to play games and have your phone at the same time, then clearly the iPhone 3gs is a good idea, as it has the most professionally developed titles.
the G1 as open as it is, isn't really all that great, it blends in to a world full of phones.. there's nothing really too special about it.It works, no problems, but I mean, it's got GPS and a camera and an app store, like every other phone.. and the apps are fairly lame, most people develop for the iPhone anyway..
I need to get some kind of iPhone emulator or something..

I think its practicality would come into question if you needed to phone 999. :D

I love my iPhone. Especially jailbroken. An iPhone is great. A jailbroken iPhone is wonderful.
Hell, you can get NES games on a jailbroken iPhone, and the roms are only illegal if you don't own a physical copy of the game.
