StingingVelvet: You've been snippy lately, not sure why. In any case I find the idea of assuming these cultures can't keep the peace as uneducated to be... well, pretty daft, really. The entire world's foreign policy is somewhat based on the fact these two cultures can't get along.
But whatever, I will go EDUCATE myself about salami, because I am hungry.
Well I must say that I agree with SimonG, you do need some more historical knowledge to better understand the issues.
I think there are many ways that the hatred could get dilluted in a much shorter timespan than you would think. Popular opinion on various subjects can change quite fast but there are several things that must be dealt with first.
I'm a cautious optimist but the volatile mix of religious fanaticism, bad living conditions, increasing populations, finite natural resources, despotic government and nuclear weapons makes me very happy that the French, Brits and Germans stole a lot of the archeological treasures in the area.
This way of describing Jews and Arabs as people that have been in conflict for centuries, incapable of change reminds me about how many Europeans looked upon the people of the former Yugoslavia when and after the civil war.
StingingVelvet: Or for someone to actually win and drive the opposition out. Which won't happen because the only logical way for that to play out is Israel losing and the West won't allow that.
SimonG: Dude, you are in Georgia. Which is probably the best place to get a good view on the whole conflict without being actually in it. Go find an expat bar and hang with some Israelis and Arabs (yes, at the same time. Yes, many actually like each other). Playing Risk with an Israeli, a Persian, a Dutch girl and Scotsman (as a couple/team) and some dude from Wyoming while drinking moonshine out of some preserving jars in an illegal bar (which was just a cellar) was probably the best fun I had over there.
And you learn a lot about the people and the region. Sadly I lost. But at least my Hitler impression was the best. Honestly, there must be some rule about making Hitler impression when playing Risk with a German ... ;-).
Sounds like a good time :-) I haven't played Risk in a long time but perhaps I should buy some compact version to bring with for the next time I'm staying at some backpacker place.
