GameRager: Buy an OEM copy of Windows from Newegg/etc for cheap(you can do it if you buy any piece of hardware from them when buying the Windows copy.).
avatar
DarrkPhoenix: An OEM copy WIndows 7 from Newegg is $99.
If they have their OS disk from the old PC or at least the serial number they can use it again on the new PC possibly. Also 99 bucks is way cheaper than 200 bucks or so for a new copy.

Only if it's a retail copy. The OEM copies are tied to the motherboard, so if you're moving to a new computer, you need a new copy.

sloganvirst: Ok, so I am getting a new computer for a freind who wants to do light gaming...

spinefarm: From what I see u are at the 450$ range check ur local dealers for this config:
Athlon II X3 455 (3.3GHz, 95W, 1.5MB total dedicated L2 cache, 4000MHz HyperTransport™ bus, socket AM3) $79.99

ASUS M4A88T-M AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard $79.99

AMD Entertainment Edition 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AE34G1609U2 - $21.99

RAIDMAX Altas ATX-295WBP Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply - $59.99

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - $89.99

ASUS EAH6670/DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 6670 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - $99.99

In Total: $431.94

The prices are from Newegg...
Yes, but those are US prices, no? Like, I was looking into the Alienware x51, since when I went to their site it said $699 - then I wen't to the NZ site and it was $1500... I don't have anywhere near that much to spend...

And remember, this isn't for high end gaming and stuff, so it doesn't need to be the latest and greatest...

I have found a retailer that can sell me a IBM IntelliStation M Pro 9229, comes with OS and DVD drive with 2gb memory, and PCI-E so I can throw my GeForce 9500gt into it.

The CPU is E6600, same lithography as the video card.

Is it a good buy for $299 NZD?

EDIT: Comes with XP installed and a licence too.

Not OEM copies bought from Newegg along with a memory stick(have to buy one hardware item along with it to get OEM pricing). I bought a copy of windows and it worked with my current computer no problem.

What power supply does the computer come with? Power, motherboard and CPU are the things that are hardest to swap. A lousy power supply can damage (or explode) other components, so getting that right is really important.

Cnet says it has a 400watt powersupply, I don't know what brand. That is why I put the model number (9229) so someone might know a thing or two about it...

Yeah, they are - as I said earlier, a Alienware X51 I saw was $699 on the site, then I went to the NZ version and it was $1599!! I could maybe, but price would just be converter, no? So still expensive?

U can try shoping from Amazon...
Check out maximumpc.com on everything including how to build a PC.

Also, you can severely, SEVERELY reduce the cost of components by smart shopping on ebay. Yes, it takes a bit more time, but you can get some real bargains there.
An Intellistation 9229 isn't even for undemanding games. It's for stopping doors open. The reason it's cheap is it's being sold as surplus. It's 5 years old or more. You won't have to worry about "infant mortality" failures; it's already getting ready to die from old age.

NZ$299 is too much for it. 100 is more like it. But in NZ, your options are severely limited, and reasonably priced computers are nonexistent.

Even so, I wouldn't even buy it to upgrade. It's so cramped inside that only a short graphics card would fit at all.

NZ$450 is equal to 223 GBP so I will put some prebuilds from amazon:

This is a bit higher as price but it's quite nice looking

For ur money you should think about Nettop PC ...yes they are slow for their money... but atleast their prices are not very high.

Check around the delivery prices and make ur move... no point of buying PC from NZ at that prices. If you want I can check prices in my country ...Here it's cheaper than UK.
Hm... thanks for doing that - however, as said, it isn't for hardcore gaming, so not too much money - this is like for occasional gaming (when he has free time - not that often).

I am considering giving him previous laptop (C2D L2 4mb, 4gb RAM) and buying a ExpressCard PCI-E 16x thing...

Any experience with these things? They appear to work, from this article anyways: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5846&review=how+to+upgrade+laptop+graphics+notebook
Mmm no... this is a bad descision. And the links I gave are not for hardcore gaming anyway... buy him a Nettop pc... it's perfect for medium games... and not that pricy
