Given the rather random focus on Joseph Gordon Levitt in the trailer, who is supposed to just be playing a cop, I'm going to wager he's being set up as whatever Nolan's version of Robin/Nightwing is, or Azrael (the replacement Batman from the comics after Bane broke Batman's back).
