haydenaurion: I see.

I have of couple of possible choices for a monitor, but i'm wondering about contrast ratio. Is there an ideal number I should look for in contrast ratio or does it even matter much?

StingingVelvet: Higher the contrast ration the better the black levels, but companies use the ratio differently so one company's 30,000:1 might not be as good as another company's 10,000:1. It's not really an standard quantifier like resolution.

Plus sometimes deep blacks are bad, as game developers today tend to make games on the dark side to compensate for people generally buying cheaper TVs with shitty blacks. Getting a TV with good blacks means you're likely to just turn the black setting down anyway so games don't look too dark.

Again, buy from a quality monitor maker like Samsung and it should balance out. I also had good luck with a Dell monitor once, but not sure how quality they are across the board. I can't speak for any other brand really, other than LG, which sucks.
Hmmm, I thought of going with ASUS, but they seem to have some quality issues half the time from what I see in reviews. Maybe I should go with Samsung again, my 720p TV is a Samsung and I haven't had any problems with it yet other than a slightly faulty power plug that kills the TV's power if you barely touch it.

Edit: If I could find a decent Samsung with a DVI input because apparently Samsung has barely heard of DVI. :/

I would buy a 120Hz monitor. It's multiple of 24 and 60. Perfect for judder-free movies.

Do they know of display port? Get one of those and an adapter (unless your video card has a display port connector).
I'm at a total loss of what to choose, it seems like whatever monitor I look at it has something wrong with it (backlight bleed, too bright, dead pixels). If anyone has suggestions for a 23 to 24 inch 16:9 monitor that has DVI input and is reliable please throw some ideas out here for me. I have to take a break before this stuff drives me batshit insane.

Viewsonic VX2336S-LED.

3 days till mine gets here! :)
Does anyone know if this is an IPS type monitor or better? I can't find any info on any site that specifies this.

I don't think Viewsonic use any non-IPS panels, do they? At least they used to be known for high-quality monitors, not cheap-o stuff.

I couldn't find it but I doubt it, it says 160 / 170 viewing angels. IPS usually have 178 / 178 I think.

However, the difference between TN panels and cheaper IPS (newer monitors with IPS) is basically only the viewing angels. You need to step up the price point so you get the advantage of S-IPS. Those monitors have 1 billion colours instead of the usual 16.7 million.

Two examples: Dell U2410 and HP ZR24440w

There's a possibility (likely) that both suffer from average contrast ratio as well but those two are high quality 16:10 screens with non-cheap IPS panels. :)

Just stay away from TN monitors and get an IPS one.

I'll try but this one tempts me because of its focus on gaming and seemingly reliable build quality.

It's a trade-off that you'll have to make. You can either get a TN 120Hz monitor (you don't really need such refresh rate if you're not looking for stereo 3D) with shitty colors and terrible viewing angle or an IPS monitor with great color fidelity but lower refresh rate.

IPS panels have a much better image quality than TN panels, but TN models are faster. I have chosen image quality above everything and i really don't regret it.

I seriously don't think you need a monitor with 120Hz refresh rate if you're not planing on using stereo 3D.

Yeah, I guess it would be useless as I don't plan on any 3D. I guess i'm just a bit weary of trying to pick the right monitor and want it to be over with.
I almost want to go with this one, but I really wish they had a 24 inch version. If it were 24 inches it would be perfect.

Edit: What is everyone's opinion on VA based monitors compared to IPS?

What's wrong with the two I recommended? They're quite expensive but you get what you pay for.

I've the Dell U2311H and I like it, it's pretty cheap and it's (E)IPS. The only down side is that I came from 1680x1050 resolution and then went to 1920x1080, that upgrade was minimal at best.

Sorry, but after my current Dell monitor not allowing me to use GPU scaling I just don't trust Dell anymore. In fact, the crap PC i'm trying to get away from is currently a Dell. As for HP, I find their quality even worse.
