It seems that every game i buy recently is a disappointment. The last game i bought was Civ5 and although interesting for a while, the 1 unit per tile (strategically intriguing and interesting for a while) slowly ground down my patience until i just couldn't stand it anymore.

If i give a list of games i like and don't like, perhaps people can suggest what other good old games i might like?

Games which i love in order of preference;

1 Alpha Centauri
2 Galactic civilizations - the whole genre and expansions, (dreadlords etc etc)
3 Total annihilation (not so much kingdoms or that 'commander' something one)
4 Age of empires 2 (the rest.... nah)
5 Civilisation Call to power and call to power 2
6 Civ 2 and 3
7 Rise of Nations
8 Dungeonsiege 2 (severely hate dungeonsiege 3)
9 Quake 1 - *love the team play campaign* ... **many good games lost my vote by skipping this capability**
10 Lionheart, legacy of the crusader
11 Galactic Assault Prisoner of power
12 Liberation day, fallen haven 2
13 Lords of the realm 2 (excruciatingly hate Lords3)
14 X2 and X3 - but as much as i love these games, the re-playability isn't there
15 Deadlock and Deadlock 2, although the AI lacks aggressiveness in D2
16 Fantasy Wars
17 Elemental and Fallen enchantress
18 Unreal tournament


Some games which i have played but are a bit 'ho hum' (1 is dislike the least) The list should be allot longer but it is almost impossible to remember all the legions of 'unremarkable' games that i have.....

1) Neverwinter nights 2 (brilliant game but the fixed treasures bore me to tears with regard to replayability)
2) Warcraft 2 (don't like warcraft 3 - too hard)
3) Civ 4 - well this game plays brilliantly but promoted unit attrition is way too high and just pisses me off constantly, (99% odds my ass!!!!!!!!!!) so i don't usually play it for this reason alone. (they fixed this in civ 5)
6) Rise of legends.... this is a game that i really should like, but um.... just dun wanna play it??
4) Seven Kingdoms - not quite sure why i lost interest here?
5) Civ 5, yea, i unit per tile too tiresome.
6) Purchased Battle Isle from GOG with recommendation from other members,,, ah,, no!!!

Buy these 3 games, they have several thousand hours of game-time between them,of the highest quality.

Overlord! It's a fantasy strategy satire, and the GOG version also comes with the expansion.

Seconding the rec for King of Dragon Pass. It's an RPG/Strategy combo.

Some other quirky strategy games are Theme Hospital and Ghost Master.

Also, there's some interesting economic strategy games here - Tropico, Port Royale.

I had a quick look at these three games in the GOG store, they look good, especially i like the look of Eador Genesis.

You found Warcraft 2 OK, but thought 3 was too hard? o.O

As to suggestions, you should try some of Paradox's grand strategies. Being a fan of sandbox TBS games, you might absolutely hate them. Or you might love the novelty - try them!

Space Rangers 2. I'll suggest it based on your enjoyment of the X series, which I also like. Note that it has substantial differences and a top down view is one such difference. The economic aspects are weaker, but I enjoyed the missions, the ongoing war against the dynamic race of "Dominators", and other elements of the game more in some ways. I'd try the demo of it.

i also forgot to mention my most favorite game ever!!! even better than Alpha....... ah well no, but close.....Total War 2! I would say it was better than Alpha if city/castle wall defenses weren't stupid.

I've started playing Disciples: Sacred Lands yesterday and I'm deeply surprised how good it is. Some people describe it as a HoMM clone. Well, yeah, in that case every single fantasy TBS should have been called HoMM clone which is ridiculous. The game is significantly different. You can, for example, produce a lot of units each turn but... it will do you no good. You should rather take care of one or two squads, let your units gain experience, upgrade them and never let them be destroyed. So instead of hordes of units (HoMM) you have just a few and therefore your strategy to win a mission is different.

There is a sequel, I assume it's even better but haven't tried it yet.

Yea in Warcraft 3 i will get wiped out unless i use a map with a tree barrier, also i find Starcraft too hard as well just because of the same early base rushes that plague both games. Interestingly, i can easily play Total annihilation against 10 AI opponents on hard, and win! The difference is that TA units don't need that intensive 'hand holding' that is needed in Warcraft 3 and Starcraft, that's what trips me up.

I have heard allot about this game over in the Egosoft forums. I might get it one day. I had a look at that game too, it looks very interesting,,,, the graphics/terrain remind me allot of Liberation Day Fallen Haven 2

All 3 are excellent, all 3 are underrated like hell ... You'll love'em, trust me :D

Second the shout for System Shock 2.

Play it when its quiet, with headphones on, and get the vibe going.

It looks to be not quite your genre type favourite, but you won't regret giving it a go....

I can at least vouch for King of Dragon Pass :D
