We are 4 people at work who enjoy games. There is little to do currently, things are slow, so we started talking about having a turnbased game running in the background.

Any suggestions? The game must NOT be 3D heavy, as this will be on our office PCs which only have integrated GPUs.

Seconded. Plus when you minimize the game, it will flash in the task bar when it's your turn.

Age of Wonders is a great hot-seat & LAN game (and there are a lot of user made maps out there, which can make it a game that will last an eternity). I actually find AoW 1 to be significantly better than HoMM, in particular in multiplayer.

Note that HIII is much more casual than AoW. You can just hop into H3 and play, rules will just eventually come to you. AoW is much more complicated. I'm not saying it's worse or anything, IMO they're about on par with each other - it comes down to what you prefer.
This patch is utterly horrible for people (like me) who suck at JA. It makes the game much more difficult. Doesn't apply to MP tho I suppose.

Heroes 3 all the way, I've had so many great heroes parties when i was a kid. I would so love to get it again and play it but damn gog likes making great sales exactly when i can't even afford to look at my wallet.

Biggest complaint we have with1.13 is that it makes it much, much easier. If you find specific parts harder, ask away, most of those can be turned off.

Oh, that's right... Battle for Wesnoth and Age of Wonders all the way! I would actually suggest AoW: Shadow Magic for multiplayer, it's much more polished.
