Everyone always talks about how great this show is. I decided to use Netflix and rent an episode where they riff Manos: The Hands of Fate, pop it in, and...
Huh...
Yeah...
I wasn't exactly expecting Fraggle Rock. I mean, I knew there would be two robots, and I knew that since this was the 90s they would use some guy-in-a-suit or controlled-by-strings-backstage method, but I had no idea they would be Muppets! Also, the show seems to have an overabundance of silly. Not that I mind it myself, but I'll have to try and hide this from the rest of my family. It's kind of embarrassing when you're going to your senior year in high school and your parents catch you watching a show this silly, you know?
I will continue to watch this, and will give you my verdict a little later. So far, I think I prefer RiffTrax, which are mostly done by the same crew. Just without the requirement of kid-friendly material or the filler. Except in The Room. There, the filler works quite nicely...
Joel Hodgson started out as a prop comedian. Mystery Science Theater 3000 began as a low-budget show on KTML in Minnesota (so-called Season 0). Even as they got a slilghtly bigger budget when they moved to Comedy Central, they kept the same do-it-yourself aesthetic.
I believe Joel does Cinematic Titanic now with several others from MST3K. One interesting thing about that show is that they tour it around to several cities to refine the material before they record it in much the same way that comedians have done since the vaudeville days.
Manos is a pretty tough episode if you haven't seen it before. It's a contender for Worst Movie Ever (though my vote goes to Monster A-Go-Go). The ending is creepy, and not in a good way.

And what exactly is wrong with Muppets?? Kermit could kick your arse and make you his bitch
I'm watching this thread VERY CLOSELY!
:)
Check out 'Prince Of Space', 'Pumaman', 'Mitchell' and 'Boggy Creek 2' if they are availble.
Mike Nelson and the team are still active with their 'Rifftrax service' where they take the p*ss out of newer and more wide known movies. 'Roadhouse' and 'Star Trek 5' get a good thumping!

Mystery science theatre is very hit and miss on its episodes. Some are hilarious, some are kind of boring, really depends on the movie they're watching.

Pumaman... What a painful film.

Nothing wrong with Muppets. Just wasn't what I was expecting...
And yeah, I've listened to RiffTrax, and really like them. The one where they take on The Room is extremely funny.
I'm about 46 minutes into the Manos: Hands of Fate episode, and so far the show has been very hit or miss. In a way, I think that the content between episodes is very similar to what Mega64 does on their show. In fact, I'm convinced that many of the ideas for their show came directly from this TV series! The parts with the two evil guys on the other end tend to miss at a higher frequency than the scenes with the robots and the human. The movie riffing itself had me laughing very loudly at some points, and groaning in pain at others. I will continue to watch and see if finishing an episode changes my opinion at all.

If you're embarrassed to be watching MST3K you most defiantly aren't ready for College. I also kinda wonder how you're managing to survive in High School. ;)

It's just this particular 90's brand of silly that I can feel uncomfortable with when I'm near other people. I'm fine watching it myself, but if I showed it to someone else, the whole time I'd be beating myself up, thinking "Why am I showing this to them? They'll think it's stupid, and then they'll think I have no taste!" I generally beat myself up for every little mistake I make, or when I do anything that might annoy someone else.
The only one I liked was Season 0 with Joel. The first one I saw was Hercules versus the Moon Men. I was laughing so hard I was hooked. It was late at night when they showed it, about 1 in the morning if I remember right. I played the tape for my friends and they were instantly hooked. All I heard was get more get more. I even joined their fan club that they had. I finally got them transfered to DVD. So I can relive those memories anytime.
The MSTK3000 movie was really good.

Well, I just finished it, and it was all right. It was amusing, though I feel I didn't start out with a very good one. Any recommendations? Hercules Versus the Moon Men sounds ridiculous enough to warrant a watch.
TheCheese33,
Please do yourself a favor and watch the "Mitchell" episode. It will most certainly change your mind about MST3K.
Also, I think they do an episode called "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank". Not 100% sure about that one though.
By the way, why did you start with Manos?!?! God, that movie could be used to cure insomnia, it was THAT boring. The only plausible reason I can think of why the commentary from Joel, Mike, and Crow might have sucked is because they themselves were possibly as bored from the movie as I was.

I started out with that one because Netflix users recommended it as a good place to start. Glad to hear that it isn't.
Queued Mitchell at the top of the list. Looking forward to it.

The Magic Sword
Pod People
There's another one I can't recall the name. It was about a guy exposed to an atomic bomb and turned into a giant.

Amazing Colossal Man. one of my all time favorites. partly because it was one of the first episodes i ever watched but mostly because i actually have the giant hypo that they used for the final host segment :)
