Oh yay, virals. They try too hard these days and it ends up annoying me instead of peaking my curiosity. I'm not a fan of marketing people and all these over-the-top attempts to try to get us involved in yet another average game (usually, anyway) is just wasted time on me. Move along.

Seriously? Decoding a cryptic message from who knows? They must have Davinci Code on the brain.
Probably had a leak and they knew the package was coming.
Viral advertising is a way for the company to advertise and hype a shitty game. Might as well polish a turd before you put it on market.

If done well, it not only hypes the game, but people might ACTUALLY BUY IT

Yeah, but it is never a good sign though. Means the developers are worried about the game.

Valve was worried about Portal?
Valve is worried about Portal 2?
I think Fight Club and The Matrix were some of the pioneers of viral marketing (at least, on the interweb), and I don't think anyone was ever in doubt of those doing well.
Wow, thanks for the great insight :p

You're welcome. That was my opinion on the MAJORITY of viral marketing campaigns. Look at the Cloverfield movie..viral marketed...and it sucked. Wooo you found some exceptions, congrats on your trolling.
I thought Cloverfield was pretty good.

So did a lot of people. Must be another exception. How dare you troll him! :p

Gundato: Yeah, you clearly don't look like an asshole <---(That was sarcasm if you didn't know)
Cloverfield was definitely not the EPIC OMG MOVIE OF THE YEAR that they were advertising it as. And it got a lot more bad reviews than good ones, both from professional reviewers and regular people. Nice try goading btw, you should try it on someone who actually cares :)

Does anything live up to its advertisement, whether it be viral, traditional, or a homeless guy running around telling people to do stuff?

Nope. That's why I don't really pay any attention to big advertisements. But the Viral strategy interests people far more than an ad in a magazine or a commercial, hence my opinion developers use the viral strategy to drum up more interest for a game/etc than a regular ad/commercial/etc would because they are worried about the game.

So, by your theory, the more something is advertised, the less faith the creators have in it?
Then why are most b-movies and Sci-Fi Original Pictures movies almost never advertised?
Why were there something like 100 trailers for Mass Effect 2?
Why did the Lord of the RIngs movies get so many advertisements?

If you actually read my posts. My OPINION is that the VIRAL ADVERTISING STRATEGY is a way for developers to drum up interest in a game/etc that they are worried about. THAT IS ALL.
