What? You can get banned for accepting a gift, even if in all good faith you ignore it was fraudulent?
I wasn't fond of Steam already but now even less. I'm glad I never jumped on the bandwaggon.

Never accept a gift from an unknown user. Any accounts tied to a redeemed gift from a fraudulent source will be permanently disabled.",

Weren't those legit ? I'm not sure, but i seem to remember those being legit codes that were being giving out to people. I just think they (the site handing out the codes) forgot to deny acess to people who weren't subscribers of the site (was it a magazine related site ?), but that doesn't mean they were fraudulent in any way.
If we're talking about the same thing i think you won't have any problems.
Anyway, gifts and codes have the potencial for being tricky with Steam.

Lucky for me I haven't poured tons of money Steam's way. Apart from the Orange box, which was around 20 bucks when I got it, I've bought 3 casual games for two bucks, Mount & Blade for $7.50 (best $7.50 I've ever spent), Unreal tournament 3 at around 15 bucks and a three other five dollar games on promos. About sixty bucks total, so if something like this happens to me i won't feel overly cheated.
Still, it'd be 60 bucks on games I'd never see again if something happened to my account, so it doesn't make me feel comfortable at all.

I still think it's absolutely ridiculous that the person who innocently accepts a gift can probably get banned. It's a bit like Russian Roulette: you COULD just have a revoked gift and continue to live a happy life, or you COULD have a deactivated account instead. The end user/giftee should be innocent here and shouldn't be dragged into this mess.
Weclock: they disabled my account at roughly 10:00pm Phoenix time, which I hastily sent them an email (first thing I did!), and since then, I have received no replies.
StingingVelvet: Still, they have deals you often just can's pass up, like the current Red Faction 3 deal where you get both older games for free. I have to try really hard not to bite on stuff like that.
Impulse also carries that deal.

CD-Action is a reputable Polish publication. They were officially given the right to distribute keys in their usual manner. While it might seem like foreigners were taking advantage of their oversight this is not the case; they have recently changed the system to require a forum account but registering does not need some special code or whatever that only subscribers have, so they clearly don't care about non-subscribers getting keys (the main purpose of the keys is to activate the games bundled on the magazine's cover discs; most don't work with Steam anyway). Whenever a promotion is finished its entry is simply removed from the page so it's not like the publisher keeps seeing serials trickling in when they don't want them to.

Sounds like a mistake on their part then. Good to hear you got it back though, can't imagine loosing my account and I only have valve games on it.

So my "it's a lame mistake on their part" theory was right ?
Geez, what a shock. They hardly ever mess things up...
You have your games back and that's all that matters.
