I have 296 games on the shelf. They are listed alphabetically. That way I scroll down till I'm in the right part of the alphabet and then I recognize the cover and voila: There it is.

I don't see how that could be improved. Having to switch between different shelves would probably take longer.
Yeah the alphabetized way works perfectly well for me. Sorting by genre would prove problematic for me, not just because of the number of games I have but that not every game here fits perfectly into one genre or another.

The only thing that I find slightly nagging is seeing "The 11th Hour" alphabetized with the letter "I" games instead of a numbered game at the top like it should be (its alphabetized position was weird too back when I had it on my wishlist). Not worth manually arranging it though since it throws my games ALL OVER the place when I try to do that, and I'd rather my time spent doing other things besides sorting through that mess.
I just discovered the DVD covers thread and finished downloading covers to all but 2 of my games! \o/

Now all I have to do is print out the covers for all the games, and that will take care of the itch to see the full shelf rather than using the list. Once I do that, I would just need to look at my physical collection to marvel at it rather than with the virtual shelf here.

But ooooggggghhhhh -- the expense that would be...

One way it could be improved is to allow categorization of games into arbitrary categories. Steam and other services have such a feature and it's quite useful in organizing my game collection there, so I've got an "Active Games" category where I move games to that I'm actually playing through currently, a "Buggy Games" category where a game goes in purgatory until I can find a way to fix a problem I'm having with it, and various other categories to sort things out by FPS/RTS/RPG/etc.
Why are people talking about shelves? This is a penis thread! Oh, wait...

voted!!, if not for the search bar I do not find anything on my shelf ...
I agree, the more options, the better.
On Darkadia they recently released customized tags, very handy the larger your collection grows. That's why I keep my collection there and here I just order them either with ascending characters or purchase date.
Nice idea

Yeah, that sort of thing would be ideal
At the moment the only organisation tip I have is that I set the games I've finished to 'hidden' - don't be afraid of that option there's a 'show hidden' box at the bottom of your shelf and if you tick it they pop right back up again
OP could include games they've acquired but are really not interested in as well / instead

I did the hidden thing briefly also, but then the games do not show up to Barefoot Essentials and end up not getting synchronized to gogwiki so I stopped using the hidden flag.
