Rohan15: Brilliant.

Sachys: Terribly - all enemies I saw (in the hour I played I will add) running sideways even before theyve seen you. the plot was drastically b-movie ripped and ultimately, it had zero immersion - i took it back for a refund!
Sorry - but I didnt enjoy Crysis one bit!

Heheheh!
Fair enough! - Different likes and opinions I suppose - but in ref to the question, both relevant!

BUT in you opinion is Crysis 1 better than Far Cry 1 or worse?

Elmofongo: How does Crysis 1 compare to Far Cry 1?
Crysis is one of the best modern FPS experiences you can get. Amazing use of mechanics that really create an awesome playing method for everyone who tackles it. There's a whole lot of variety, a solidly long campaign, and constantly shifting objectives that really help the pacing. If your aversion isn't to free form, then Crysis is amazing.

Me?
Actually found the opposite to the claim of Rohan and found FC1 far more immersive / playable / open and stealthy - plus recent mods have made it better!
Crysis I found to be unplayable - hence I took it for a refund!
If they're both cheap as, however, and you have the dosh - get both!
I find the transition in what I like about the Far Cry games interesting.

I thought Far Cry looked great. That's about the nicest thing I can say about it though.

Far Cry 2 then went and used the six thousand shades of poop colour palette that was oh so popular at the time but it had some gameplay additions and changes that made it more fun.

Far Cry 3 is a great game, they managed to perfect the gameplay, but unlike every review I've read I'm not wowed by it's graphics in the slightest. The rain effects and transitions are outright horrible and the sun shafts only appear when you stare directly at the sun. The Stalker series spoiled me with doing these things right several years ago.

I played it eight years ago. I remember liking it.

I think 2 could have used a little more "stuff" - that was a lot of empty land to traverse.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: As someone who played the games within about a year of each other, Far Cry 2 was better than Far Cry 1, in almost every way.

Yeah, Far Cry 2 had some irritations. But Far Cry 1 was almost nothing but irritations, or worse (the boss battle and certain segments after the half way mark were damn near unplayable). I still like it--or at least the first half. The way it integrates stealth and action is still pretty unique, and the AI is loads of fun to play cat and mouse with. And it sure is pretty even today. But I have a very hard time convincing myself to replay it again, simply because I don't feel like putting up with the amount of trial and error frustration it had... with a checkpoint-only save system. I'm sorry. You can have checkpoint-only save systems, or you can have insta-death mutants and choppers and brutally unforgiving stealth. You can't have both.

Again, it's not that I think the game sucks, it's that I think they botched a huge number of their good ideas in decisively ruinous ways.

I can agree with some of that - though i found FC2 to be too repetetive and easy myself - for some opposite reason to your statement.
i look forward to trying FC3 at any rate!

This. Far Cry 1 was a very flawed possible gem. Crysis was a borderline masterpiece. The way all the powers interacted with the fantastic physics and AI was just...awesome. It's still one of the only games I've finished and then started right back up again.

I just wish that Crytek hadn't forgotten what made the game so good when they were designing the last 3rd. From the tank battle onward it gets significantly less interesting (if still relatively fun).

Yeah, I'm not going to deny that Far Cry 2 has some less-than-perfect design choices and can come across as too little game spread across too much space and time. The reason I enjoy it so much is that most of its faults are things I personally have a very easy time looking past in favor of the nearly endless sandbox fun (I think I've played more Far Cry 2 than just about any other FPS of this generation, because when you get down to it miost of the gameplay is a blast).

Psuja: My reaction was even more extreme. This game has no soul. There is nothing in the story, weapon, level or monster/enemy design that make it stand out from the crowd. Not to mention things that hold it back like semi automatic rocket launchers with infinite ammo or horrible enemy AI. Its just a lengthy tech demo.

I finished almost every FPS that is availible on GOG and many more that arent, including many mods and user made maps, was addicted to CS for three years, played 100+ hours of the original enemy territory, and yet i couldnt make myself finish the second level. Something is clearly wrong with this game, and I have no clue as to why was it overlooked in the post release reviews.
Haha that's the problem with ALL of Crytek's games. They're all technical masterpieces, but that's all they are. Glorified tech demos. All their games are so hard to get through for me because i have no drive to get through them. Because they have no soul or charm to them.
Not every game has to be "realistic" nor has to have some story that makes one weep buckets o' tears. Whatever happened to just plain fun?

But on the subject of Far Cry: it's not particularly special, but I thought it was somewhat fun. Problem is certainly the difficulty in my book. I got to one part a few hours in and, even though it was dark, could NOT seem to slip past some bad guys. Eventually I gave up, used cheat codes, and still enjoyed the game for what it was - cool, dumb, badass fun. (imo)

If i recall correctly there was an official patch that added a save anywhere system.

Far Cry 2? Yes.

Far Cry 3 makes both predecessors pretty much pointless, as it takes the best of both and combines it into one awesome game.
