How do I make it stay sorted the way I left it with empty spaces?

when you load the shelf, there's a dropdown menu on the top right, is that on manual?

I know I had a problem with my shelf resorting a while back, I think I fixed it by sorting my shelf the way I wanted then logging out & back in on the theory that it might save the state. It worked but it could have been a complete coincidence

I just started playing around with it. It also looks like you can not leave any spaces on the shelf.

You will need to fill the top shelf first and work your way down.

Nope, since the PR stunt, you can no longer have empty spaces on your shelf. You can make them, but they'll disappear when you reload, which is really annoying.
