try this (after you reinstall and if it doesn't work)

1. exit Steam (File > Exit)
2. Go to C: > Program Files (x86) > Steam
3. Delete File named "ClientRegistry.blob"
4. Restart Steam and let it update, then try again

iainmet: That is not a Steam issue.

Dawn of War 2 has an extra layer. The achivements are not Steam. It is a Games For Windows Live (GFWL) title and the achievments are done through that side of things. So GFWL dropped out which kicked you back out to Steam. Then when you reconnected it logged you back in to the MS service and you could carry on.
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/09/why-relic-dropped-games-for-windows-live-in-dawn-of-war-2-retribution/
I doubt it's GFWL since they apparently dropped it in Retribution
Update:

Did the re-install. No joy. Switched servers. No joy. Keeps giving me the same error message. bbiab

I'll keep watching the thread.

I know the initial release of DoW2 it was GFWL

Looking on Steam just then it has achievements listed for Retribution. My mistake, didnt realise they removed GFWL...Apologies

It is a strange one though, never had a game jump out onto my library due to an error with achievments. You normally get the achievment and then once things are back up and running on Steams side it syncs them up and shows them as unlocked.

Hmmmmm, I wish I had some advice for you, when this happens to me it's usually during the Sales, or something where a lot of people are downloading something (I'm guessing a lot of people are looking at the MW3 free weekend). For me, I usually just hold off til it gets later, less people using everything.

Just looking on the support page for Alan Wake. Its the Steam Cloud error you are getting.

Try this :

Right click the game on the left and select properties.

Now click set launch options

paste in :

-cleancloud

This apparently sorts out errors regarding the Steam Cloud. After running the game with that parameter make sure you remove it before you start the game again or it will remove your save and settings.

spinefarm: Try switching your Download server to an european one... here is after midnight so I guess the servers are a bit less easy to use ;)

Btw I will PM you a game to entertain yourself if changing servers doesn't work for you :)
LOL I saw that. Thanks man!
Update: I have done everything mentioned thus far. And yes even -cleancloud command. Guess what... Same error.

So, now we have these current options:

One copy of any one of these three.winner's choice: Age of Wonders I, II & III

If AoW doesn't tickle your fancy I'll hand over Steam key to Wolfenstein (2009)

If neither of those options suit your tastes... Soulbringer

Winners choice.

One winner will be chosen when Alan Wake is up and running. Hopefully sometime tonight!

I must admit though. For a first time experience.. This is not good. LOL If I had bought my first game here and the same thing had happened. And I had tried every suggestion, everything I could find and nothing worked. I probably just would have said fuck it. LOL Fortunately, it didn't work out that way. I'm glad I got to stay. However, if I can't get this resolved I'm probably gonna have to say fuck steam. This has turned into a major time consuming pain in my ass. LOL
TF2 is still working like a champ though. So, I'm starting to seriously wonder if this is actually server issue. I'm gonna uninstall Steam and re-install and see if this fixes.

Don't forget to check out the Alan Wake forums and if you really need to, file a support ticket. Sorry that it's been such a bummer for you :-\

It hurts me to say this but... Remedy screwed one very good game.As I read around steam forums... a lot of issues with the game out there. I don't think it is a server issue just downloaded 7gb of King Arthur and my dl speed was maxed out.
Try this: Install last drivers for your video and latest DX out there... and if this don't help...just go shoot some people in Tribes Ascend ;)

If it won't authorize wouldn't that be Steam's fault and not Remedy's? I mean, I know some people screw up their game and Steamworks integration, that's their fault, but how does crap like that get past Valve's QA?

Remedy screwed the game in total. Game is lagging on quite good pc's. Problems with Ati videos...etc. A lot of issues for a 20 euro game.
And actually the game is quite hard to play without a gamepad ;)

Oh I see, issues in addition to the auth issue. My bad, yeah, that's uncool, though sadly it hardly puts it in any kind of exclusive club among PC games:(
Alright, so I go to post in the support forum. I see a thread with some folks having the exact same issue. I register and go to post in the thread:

LOL, this just keeps getting better. Now I'm in a waiting line for the mods to approve my account. Fuck me.
Don't worry it gets better and better with every issue you will find dealing with steam + steam support ;)
