barleyguy: I've seen and met Dillinger. They are quite good. But they didn't invent Mathcore. There were at least a dozen Mathcore bands before them. The earliest I know of is Candiria, which predated them by almost a decade.

thegapinglotus: Well I stand corrected. I was under the impression that they at least somewhat "popularized" it, but I guess I didn't research the genre enough, oh well can't win 'em all, eh? I'll definitely check out Candiria then because I certainly do like Dillinger. BTW what were they like I haven't had the opportunity to see them live or meet them, are the pretty cool?

It's possible that they did "popularize" it. Mathcore (or "Math Metal"), is very complex music, and so tends to be a niche thing. Candiria has never called themselfves Mathcore, but they have all of the musical components of it (agressive metal sound, polyrhythmic drums, counted time signatures, seperate basslines, breakdowns from other musical genres). Which is why I say that Dillinger didn't invent it. There are other bands that have had all of the components as well. (Sidhe from Denver is another one.) But possibly Dillinger is the first to be recognized for it.
Dillinger Escape Plan is fun to see. They are heavy, but a little wacky. And unlike many heavy bands, they have a really good light show as well. They bring along a lot of their own techno lights when they play smaller venues. They are definitely worth seeing.
As far as Youtube videos, here's one from Candiria that shows their complex time signature. Their earlier stuff from the mid 90's is a bit more wacky though.

Trance Around the World is also on DI.FM . Their stations are excellent in general, and if you pay them $6 a month you can get 256 Kbps quality with no commercials. Or you can listen to 128K for free, with about 2 commercials an hour.
RE: Blues Traveler. I really enjoy them. They come to Red Rocks (west of Denver) every 4th of July. I've seen them 3 times. It's always a good show. In 2006 Jonny Lang opened for them. :-)

My favorite band is Daniel Amos. I can't give you a genre; it depends on which album it is.Terry Scott Taylor is a fantastic songwriter, and I love Tim Chandler's bass parts.
Bill Mallonee is another favorite. He's just reformed the Vigilantes of Love. To me, Bill is one of the best songwriters ever.
I love Talking Heads; Tina Weymouth's bass parts are wonderfully musical. I find it amusing that so many of Talking Heads imitators were so sarcastic and ironic when they were almost never ironic.
Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Basia. Her new album (first in 15 years) is really good. It's wonderful to have her back.
I love John Coltrane's music, though I wish so many people didn't try to imitate him. And I think the Chicago Symphony still has the best brass sound.
In no particular order:
Rancid - Ruby Soho

The Clash - I Fought The Law
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBeT4ptY9sY
Motorhead - Orgasmatron

Electric Prunes - I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night

Judas Priest - Electric Eye

The Allman Brothers - The Whipping Post

Hammerfall: Wow, lots of metalheads here!
For me it's all about Prog/Power metal.
Symphony X
Hammerfall
Heavenly
Iced Earth
Amon Amarth (Favorite Melodic DM band)
You get the point....

Very good list!

shakezilla: Also, there's this really cool new band called rage against the machine that you may not have heard of.

It's not that new. It has existed since 1991, so it's about 18 years old. Sure, they had a break from the year 2000 till 2007, but ... well you see my point.
BTW: One of their song, namely "Wake Up", was in the final scene of "Matrix".
Cheers.:)

Some stuff I like that hasn't been mentioned yet. Mostly metal, but not all.
Sinergy - Gonzo Finnish power metal fronted by a crazy-woman.
Beautiful Sin - power metal with a very dense sound and an amazing vocalist. Sadly, they only have a single album.
Xandria - somewhere between melodic metal and alternative rock. Really nice sound.
Firewind - Greek metal. Not the most original band out there, and their composition is still on the weak side, but they boast one of the very few male metal vocalists that I really like. They also have a very crisp, yet potent sound that appeals to me. If they can get a bit more creative, I think they'll be awesome.
Gamma Ray - These guys have been around for a while, but to be honest I don't much like their older stuff, as I'm not a fan of old-school metal. Their latest album is more contemporary, though, and I'm digging it (though I'm sure their longtime fans probably hate it).
The Birthday Massacre - I dunno. Synth-rock with new wave and punk influences? They also really like crunchy guitar riffs. Some good stuff, but the vocalist varies her style significantly from one song to the next, so she's sometimes annoying.
Enigma - 90s electro new age soft rock? Most people have probably heard this band before, even if they don't know the name. I find it very relaxing.
I generally listen to a lot of different stuff. Some metal, some game music, something else, this and that.
Lately though Air has been on my playlist quite a bit.
I'm also finding myself drawn to hippie style psychedelia again... I just found this compilation called "Fun with Mushrooms", which was released on a now defunct British label called "Delirium Records". It's been out of print for years, so I had to download it, along with another compilation called "Psychedelic Psauna". I also once heard a CD called "A deadly dose of heavy psych", which had a bunch of little known psychedelic garage rock from the late 60s/early 70s, which was awesome - and I really need to buy some day.
Are there any labels out there that generally specialize in this stuff (other than the "stoner metal" type ones I already love, like Southern Lord and Tee Pee)?

Try to get hold of this album. It is fantastic, and I can guarantee that you've heard little or none of it before.
Also the Dukes of Stratosphear EP "25 O'Clock" is a brilliant genre pastiche tribute to psychedelia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Y01C1ISP8
