I own an iPod touch, have owned an iPod 20gb player, and a Zune 80gb, and I can say without doubt that the Zune is the best sounding one. You can just tell when you hear it.
The headphones that came with it were the best I've used too. Great sounding and magnetic heads, meaning no tangled up wires. Don't understand why this isn't done with all headphones.
Had a stupid argument a couple of years ago with a professed audio anorak who was arguing all mp3 player sound quality is the same with the same pair of headphones. Sound quality is determined by the sum of the player's technical parts as well as the engineering choices that have been made, so it's possible some of the Sansa devices are better sounding.

The Zune Pass really makes me want to get one. I just need to convince my parents that me buying yet another MP3 player with my salary is a smart decision. Maybe if I gave them one of my old models?

You could do that, but also if your family has fellow music-lovers you could suggest they consider getting a Zune too. Even if they got one of the most cheapest models, they could use the Zune subscription too and make the pass even more of a bargain.

Why I love the Zune HD:
-Zune Pass
-Free Audiosurf (tilt controls--awesome!)

anjohl: The best MP3 palyers soundwise are the Sansa players, in particular the Fuze and Clip models. That is objective fact.

Delixe: Can you back that 'fact' up with a link?

Something need not have already been said to be correct. The original author of an idea is considared "citable", as is original thought.
If you want a semi-subjective proof, try anythingbutipod or cnet. Both sites, highly acreddited, GUSH over the Clip soundchip (Which is the same chip in the Fuze).

Don't bother, anjohl has a special use for the word 'fact'.
I am one of those people who still buy cds. I'm quite fond of them. And it allows for easy music playing when I'm home and the pc is off.
EDIT: wow, grooveshark looks pretty good. What's the catch? As in, why don't I have to pay for this?

Zune Pass mostly sucks. I canceled it this month and don't miss it much. I doubt it's their fault, but they're missing a lot of indie stuff I'd like access to, and the reason I don't blame them is they do have quite a few very obscure artists but are missing big guns like (afaik) the entire Warp and Kranky catalogs. Worse, artists regularly withhold a single track from streaming privileges so that you can only get it by purchasing the full album. Again, I can't really blame MS for this, but if you want me to subscribe to your service, pay whatever you have to and make it what it should be.
The one pang I had about canceling is the intelligent DJ feature in the Zune software is *really* good, and I loved being able to generate a Pandora-style playlist from my own collection and have Zune add artists I wasn't familar with into the playlist. This was flawed because you couldn't omit your library and have it all from Zune Pass, or even set a ratio, but the end result was still very nice.
Pandora is still the best I know, and when I start getting antsy for random new music again I'll probably give them some money. I do wish they'd let you give thumbs down to their reasons for picking a song rather than the song itself.

Yes, I do have a special use for the word fact, the CORRECT one. It is not my duty, nor anyone elses, to overcome their detractors disbelief. If you will not take my word that the Sansa players have THE best song chip, go read up on the player at the sites I listed, and fiond out for yourself.

I like Pandora, but I have found that over time they seem to have shifted their emphasis from "we will stream music that is musicologically similar to what you specify" to "we will stream popular stuff that people with your tastes tend to like." Lately my stations have been very repetitive without much/any new "discovery," despite having quite a few artist seeds in each one.
These days I have been using Slacker more often than Pandora. It's a very similar service, but it has (in my opinion) better micromanagement of station settings, allowing you to explicitly say whether you want more or less new artist discovery, and more or less popular tracks from each artist.
