Final Fantasy 7 just owns this thread. I've never understood the blind passion some have for that game. Maybe it's because I'm old school and still think the first one is the best.

neoscorpio: What more do you want from Diablo 2? Is there any other dungeon crawl/ hack n slash action RPG which has anything more than Diablo 2 has?
I don't want repetitiveness. I don't want same shit after 20 hours of gameplay. Exactly the same...
there is no difference whatsoever between killing skeletons at 1 hour in and then killing skeletons 20 hours in.

Sure. Some people might like it. Some people like campervans and blood sausages.

For me, tough, Diablo 2 is overrated. It is a good game. Brainless fun is fun sometimes. Yet I don't believe it deserve the cult following, the fanboyism it currently has.
It is not Justin Bieber of gaming but it is not Pink Floyd either.

Joppelarius: - I agree that playing Zelda games or Goldeneye 007 isn't spectacular nowadays, but it used to be. Nintendo 64 used to own console gaming, many of you seem to have forgotten that. Sega was dying and Playstation was just getting started up.

Mentalepsy: The N64 is what broke my loyalty to Nintendo consoles.

I loved the NES and the SNES for their great libraries of games, but I think I would struggle to name half a dozen great games on the N64. It was a tremendous disappointment. I eventually just put it away and got a Playstation instead.
1. 007 Golden Eye
2. Super Mario 64
3. Banjo Kazooie
4. Banjo Tooie
5. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (considered by many to be the greatest game of all time)
6. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
7. Mario Kart 64
8. Blast Corps
9. Perfect Dark
10. Super Smash Bros.
11. Conker's Bad Fur Day
12. Wave Race 64
13. Donkey Kong 64
14. Paper Mario
15. Resident Evil 2
16. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

& that is just off of the top of my head, so you must not be thinking very hard :^)

As for the most overrated game I have ever played.... God of War. That game is supposed to be a AAA title but to me it is just a generic hack & slash with some platforming elements.

lukaszthegreat: monkey island 3

it wasn't that funny. grim fandango is superior to it in so many levels.

GameRager: 1. Mouse control. 2. toon look and amazing cutscenes that belong in a movie or tv show. 3. Guybrush FREAKING Threepwood.
yet Grim was so much better. Controls i got used to. Cutscenes were more epic and funnier, Manny is better than threepwood (i have no nostalgia goggles for either of them as GF i finished for the first time in january 2009 and MI3 later that year. didn't touch MI1 or 2 yet)

Oh. btw. I do not say that MI3 was bad. Just slightly overrated. GF is better so I longest Journey (even those 2 can be compared)

GameRager: MI 1/2 have slightly more complexe controls and more dated graphics, but they recently released new releases with better graphics for both, which one can play in either classic or new grpahics/control mode as one plays.
I got MI1 SE but only played for half an hour. Just started it yesterday as I need break from EU3
Ok here it comes people, brace yourselves...

Planescape Torment

Yeah, seriously. I just never figured out what it is that people see in this game and God knows I've tried. It is just... uninteresting, and the leveling system is so confusing. Generally, when I level up my characters in a RPG, I'd like to know how each stats affects my character so I can develop them the way I want to. In Torment I had no idea how to get myself, for example, a mage-type character and how to expand his magical abilities. And what's with the immortal main character? "Oh no I just died!!! Oh wait a second, nevermind..." But I must confess that I never really got into this game despite the time and effort I sacrificed for it, so maybe I've misjudged something. On the other hand, I never found the game entertaining enough to keep on playing, so that does tell something, doesn't it? Oh well, I guess you just can't like 'em all. Now go ahead and crucify me to the Tree of Woe.

Ok, some other games then:

Half-life series
While they are all great games, they're not the ultimate "ZOMG LiKE bEst games EVAH!!11!!" to me.

Halo series
I'm a die-hard Halo fan but I do acknowledge the fact that the games, while I find them very entertaining, aren't really that groundbreaking in any way and are massively overhyped due to their popularity.

Bioshock
Another of the rather obvious choices. It's a decent shooter with nice visuals but gets oh so boooring, and the story isn't all that ingenious, regardless of what the critics say.

Morrowind
While being my favourite game ever made, some folks just go too far with their praise for it. It is in many ways a flawed game, after all, although that has never kept me from enjoying it.

Oblivion
The number one game of pretty much every critic and casual gamer back when it was released. I never thought it to be more than average, and I even hated the supposedly stunning visuals. Everything just shone like a nuclear blast and the characters looked as if they were made of rubber.

Call of Duty series
Can't really say I've played too many of them but from what I've seen I'm not convinced they're worth the hype. When you think about it, a game series that has received as much hype as COD simply can't be worth it, right? I mean, the games might be cool and entertaining and all, but to match the amount of praise they've received they'd have to be out of this world...

Coming in summer 2012: Call of Duty 9: Out of this World Warfare

Oh well...

Wow... it's amazing how much I agree with this, especially God of War.

Everything else you said is matter of taste. I don't agree but that does not make you wrong or makes me right.

Quoted part....

Tell me about SINGLE game where your character is not immortal. Just one (flash game does not count)

I just need one title where your character can die.
I'm actually glad to see this thread hasn't devolved into a flamefest. It's a fun thread but all really kinda silly. Every game that has ever been hyped will have somebody claiming that it is completely overhyped.

My examples:
1. Ocarina of Time was a good game, but no where near good enough to be considered the best Zeld game to me. Link to the Past on the SNES fills that role in my opinion.
2. The whole GTA series is completely overhyped in my opinion. And actually a sad testament to the human race that it would be as liked as it is with its content.
3. Any of the CoD's past CoD2. Multiplayer holds no appeal for me so the reduction in singleplayer makes the games almost completely worthless to me.
4. Halo series. These are really just avg at best shooters to me. Nothing about the gameplay seemed innovative to me and the storyline just really did nothing to grab my interest.

But like a said, I'm sure alot of the games I think are worth what people claim will be denounced as overhypped by someone else. Some already have been.

Oh well, the thread has been fun and I hope it keeps going.

Nope

your character is immortal
Eeeh, don't have the time or energy to go through the full (though perhaps well written and intelligent) thread, but I'd just like to say that there is no such thing as an overrated game. Games have a purpose, and that is to entertain us and take our mind on a roller coaster ride rather than bore it to stiffness on other things. That said, if x number of people things that a game is awesome, how can the y group of people tell them that game is overrated and they shouldn't enjoy it. A bunch of pompous asses, if you ask me. Like all the threads where someone glorifies a game, another shits over it, and a flame war erupts. Just stupid, really. Not saying you're stupid for pointing out that a game is overrated, but I go by the roman proverb that one cannot discuss tastes.

How is your character immortal? If any of the 4 dies they are just no longer a part of the story. No character is immortal in Heavy Rain.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or you have just never played Heavy Rain....

Nevertheless I have thought of another terribly overated game.... Metal Gear Solid 4.

The flow of the game

30 minute cutscene- 10 minutes of action- 10 minute cutscene- 10 minutes of action- 10 minute cutscene- 5 minutes of action- 15 minute cutscene- Boss fight- Repeat.

It gets fucking old.
