El_Double: And what's with the immortal main character? "Oh no I just died!!! Oh wait a second, nevermind..."
lukaszthegreat: Everything else you said is matter of taste. I don't agree but that does not make you wrong or makes me right. Quoted part....
Tell me about SINGLE game where your character is not immortal. Just one (flash game does not count)
I just need one title where your character can die.

RottenRotz: i mean....you gotta be kidding me..youre kidding,right?RIGHT??
fallout 3 has to do with rpg as much as jim carrey has with nuclear science
GameRager: You have an inventory and go through a world talking and helping(or hurting) people while advancing your skills.....so while it's not RPG heavy it is still part rpg, and also part FPS, and part whatever else it has. fallout 3 has to do with rpg as much as jim carrey has with nuclear science
Titanium: Eeeh, don't have the time or energy to go through the full (though perhaps well written and intelligent) thread, but I'd just like to say that there is no such thing as an overrated game. Games have a purpose, and that is to entertain us and take our mind on a roller coaster ride rather than bore it to stiffness on other things. That said, if x number of people things that a game is awesome, how can the y group of people tell them that game is overrated and they shouldn't enjoy it. A bunch of pompous asses, if you ask me. Like all the threads where someone glorifies a game, another shits over it, and a flame war erupts. Just stupid, really. Not saying you're stupid for pointing out that a game is overrated, but I go by the roman proverb that one cannot discuss tastes.
GameRager: Oh YES there ARE overrated games.....ET for Atari, for example. ;) Arteveld

Roberttitus: I don't know if you are being sarcastic or you have just never played Heavy Rain....
Nevertheless I have thought of another terribly overated game.... Metal Gear Solid 4.
The flow of the game
30 minute cutscene- 10 minutes of action- 10 minute cutscene- 10 minutes of action- 10 minute cutscene- 5 minutes of action- 15 minute cutscene- Boss fight- Repeat.
It gets fucking old.
Heavy Rain is great tech demo, but ultimately fails as a game, IMO.Nevertheless I have thought of another terribly overated game.... Metal Gear Solid 4.

Some people are clearly just listing high profile games they don't like, I'm not really sure that was the question though.

El_Double: Um, I kinda meant that whenever you're killed you're reborn, while your party members might still be fighting the very same critter that killed you. "Immortal" was probably a bad choice to describe it since the main char can die, he's just immediately reborn and so dying doesn't really affect the gameplay in the sense that you don't have to be afraid of getting the main char killed.
the thing is... In heavy rain if you die the story can either continue as the death is just part of the story. like that chick's death in FF. can be avoided tough.
But if you screw up too much
if you screw up in thousands of other games...
there is a button for rewinding time. its officially called load button.
You don't have to be afraid of getting your character killed in practically ANY game. In heavy rain and few others death of characters just mean gameplay will be a bit different from now on.
so...
dieing sometimes does affect gameplay like in Heavy Rain or handful of other games. It is never permanent tough. in 99% of games.... whether it is PST or BG or Half life or Need for Speed.
Death is meaningless.

GameRager: Though the WAYS in which that "immortality" is portrayed or used in gameplay mechanics can be key to making a game good or bad.
True. That's why PST is superior in that way as the immortality which is present in almost every game is so much better portrayed as it allows skipping the annoying parts, is used as part of the plot and as a game mechanic. much better than traveling in time with your characters.

Well, the way i see it, favorite=taste, taste =/= overall quality. Add to that the fact, we're talking about, what should be, objective opinions of critics. So, i wouldn't feel bad if someone pointed out 5 of my fav games.[i wish someone had]
It won't matter much, separating taste from quality, gives a lot of breathing space. I had a few friends who were really offended when i criticized [after being asked for an opinion] something they like. After some years they've accepted the fact, that they are entitled to like something, that is not necessarily good.;) It's also very liberating to say "it's a piece of s$$t, but i enjoy every bit of it".
