See, Final Fantasy VII is one of those "obvious" ones that I deliberately skipped over. :p

FF7 is not a bad game. It's just an okay game. It's a pretty middle-of-the-road example of the Final Fantasy series, and of JRPGs in general. Much like Halo, it just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

And yeah, the big mid-game spoiler that everyone gets all soggy about, the rotten emotional core of the story? I had two immediate thoughts when it happened: "Thank God" and "Crap, do I get my materia back?"

I don't think I've made it all the way through a FF game since III, and I know I've tried...

GameRager: They are definatelyt games you have to finish over multiple sittings.......you can't even finish the game if you play for 24 hours straight IMO. (7 I mean)
Nah, I just get distracted as they don't hold my attention or get so complex with no rhyme or reason that I just quit caring. I think X might have been a victim of WOW though.

Starcraft.
Baldurs Gate 1 & 2.
Battlefield 2.

GameRager: This has got to be a joke.....most of that list are some of the best games of all time on gog and elsewhere, in their respective genres.
Agreed. Really, as I see it, any talk about what games are "overrated" is kind of a joke. People just treat the term as a license to smugly say, "Those who like these popular games that I dislike have bad taste, and that's that," without actually thinking about why others hold those games in high esteem. (Of course, a popular game may well be crap, but it's perfectly possible to talk about a game's failings without criticizing its fans.)

I mean, look at the opening post--platformers as a genre are overrated? I can certainly understand someone not being able to get into them, and that's fine, but a dismissive statement like that is a bit much. I'm not the biggest fan of multiplayer-based FPSes, but that doesn't make them overrated.
The only FF games that I actually like are 1, 3, 4, and 6.

2 would probably have been alright if I had stuck with it despite the absurd combat system. 5 was very, very boring, and had a terrible cast of characters* and a weak musical score. 7 was okay, 8 I actively despised, and 9 was sort of dumb.

I never played any of them after 9.

* I was surprised when Faris was revealed to be a woman, not because I thought she was a man, but because it was so blindingly obvious she was female that I didn't realize it was meant to be a secret.

Damuna: Seven hours getting out of Midgar can really take it out of you.

What's worse is the proportion of that which is random battles.
god yes, that spiraling screen and battle theme from FF7 is etched into my mind!
i always got startled when hurrying to get out of the random battle zones

Damuna: Clearly, you've never watched a Korean drama. :P
Is there some esoteric piece of cultural knowledge you'd care to share on the subject? I'm curious what is different about Korean dramas.
Fallout

Oh yeah it's on! Not only was Fallout awesome it appeared out of a wasteland (teehee) where there was ne'er a good RPG in sight!

It was a RPG where you could be the character you wanted to be, quite refreshing. I would agree that it was awful short, though.
I'd say ocarina of time. Not a bad game, but I just remember forcing myself to get through it.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Also an ok game, but in the end it quite repetive and not that fun to play.

Broken sword 2: the smoking mirror.
I actually finished it and it wasn't that bad, but the moment it was over I just had the feeling, that I would realy hate to play it ever again.

There's got to be a desert island to which you and Damuna can be banished, you heretics!

I LOLed when I saw you had a fallout symbol.
I have not gotten around to playing it yet, but I own the trilogy (1+2 and tactics).
I gotta finish DA: O first.
Halo
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo {add_whatever_sequel_is_there}

Damuna: Women masquerading as men is a staple of Korean drama, and nobody in the show ever seems to realise despite how completely obvious it is.
Lol, okay, thanks for sharing.

You don't need to bother with Tactics, to say it's sub-par is being kind.

Well I like to rip apart games most people love as I'm really picky so I will limit myself to 5 in no order. No offense meant people :).

1) Half-Life 2: Has some of the worst AI in an FPS and a boring story. Not to mention the physics puzzles that are supposed to show off the physics engine make me wish it was gone.

2)Deus Ex: Is the game good? Yes, but this is not the best game ever made and the game is heavily flawed despite the things it does brilliantly. The clunky interface and gunplay are the main things that stop it from being something truly amazing.

3)Quake 2: Ok, they took the inventive setting from the first one, thoroughly raped it with the generic sci-fi setting then slowed down the gunplay to a crawl compared to the original.

4)Morrowind: Every time you hear open RPG someone has to mention how this is the greatest thing to grace the Earth. It isn't by a mile. Whoever designed the combat around such blatant dice-rolls need to be fired and whoever designed the world needs to learn to use more than a few colors. Granted the game isn't as bad as Oblivion with the bloom up to 11 and green *everywhere* but brown gets old quick.

5)Mass Effect 1 and 2: Who thought it would be a good idea to make a cover shooter with brain-dead AI then slap on a few RPG elements as an excuse for bad gameplay?
