RUSBoris: Monkey Island games. The game makes no sense!

I remember in the second MI, a scene where you were in some hut in a tree with a bunch of papers scattered around and you needed to find something underneath them.

The solution: grab a bloodhound dog, pick him up by the collar with your fingertips (disregard the fact he weights more than Guybrush himself), and stuff him in your coat pocket (literally). Climb the ladder back to the hut, and release him there. WHO WOULD THINK OF GRABBING A DOG AND PUTTING HIM IN YOUR COAT POCKET FOR A PUZZLE? Uninstalled the game after that and never tried the rest. The first Monkey Island was about the same, but made just a wee bit more sense. The second was unbeliveable

Adokat: Putting impossibly large things in your coat is the basis for at least half the adventure game puzzles I've ever solved (and I've played an awful lot). It's just a convention of the genre.
Well thankfully modern 3D based games have ditched this illogical mechanic. Wouldn't it make (more) sense to somehow lure him up to the hut instead? Say with a trail of honey or a pair women's underwear? :)

Eh, if you like adventure games, it's just something you come to accept. Modern games have tons of illogical mechanics that we take for granted.

The ridiculousness for puzzles like that is because Monkey Island is a comedy game that doesn't need or indeed tries to be serious - part of its allure is the wackiness. It made me chuckle when I told Guybrush to pick up the dog and he actually DOES by stuffing it into his jacket. You may not think it's that funny, and that's fine - I don't expect everyone to have the same sense of humour, but I just wanted to say that there's a method to the madness.

One word: Sacred.

The game is not about "lol<insertboss>grind4uniques". Far from it, actually. Also the story is superior.

Joppelarius: As a new member, I was wondering if you guys can think of any games that have been overrated in the press or by people in general. I, for one, can sum up a short list:
1) Half-Life: I was bored with it back then, and I still am when I start it up now. I mean, what does it have that System Shock or Quake didn't have? It looks pretty awful too, even with the new Source engine. I really don't get that many people call this one of the best games ever. To earn such a title it would have to be so good I couldn't stop playing it even 10 years later. The only games I know of that have this with me, are Diablo 2 Lod, STarcraft BW, Gothic 2 and the Baldur's Gate series.
2) Sacrifice and Citizen's Giant: Kabuto (or sth): two different genre games with sort of the same look, from the same gaming era. They were praised in the media but sold pretty poorly. I thought they were absolute crap, I agree with everyone who didn't buy them, and strongly disagree with the suspiciously high number of positive reviews on them.
3) platform games like Metroid, Cave Story, etc.
Some of these like the Mario or Sonic games were fun.. IN 1989! I reallyy don't see how a 2D side-scroller with frustrating gameplay elements can be fun in 2011.

Any comments or similar lists?
OMG, Sacrifice is one of the best strategy games I ever played. I bet you did not play with the game much.
1) World of Warcraft - I just consider it a grindy mess and I feel bad for the small amount of money and time I spent on it. People devote their free time to this and that baffles me. Throw in any other similar MMO as the same thing...

2) Knights of the Old Republic - I don't OMG LOVE Star Wars like some people, I thought the original trilogy was pretty good family sci-fi but that's about it. I played KotOR more as a Bioware fan and it was a) very console focused and b) very bland, I thought. The writing was mundane and the overall story, other than the big reveal, was kind of plodding. Story wise Bioware did much better work before and after.

3) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - As a Daggerfall and Morrowind fan Oblivion was like a cold shower. Less interesting dialogue and story, horrible level scaling that was drop-dead obvious, bland fantasy world instead of the interesting and alien landscapes of Morrowind. On top of that there was no choice or consequence, stats didn't matter due to mini-games and combat being based on player skill and the game was designed around an arrow telling you where to go at all times. Just pathetic for an RPG really, though a decent hack n' slash game that was not what the sequel to Morrowind should have been. Fallout 3 was a bit better but still suffered from many of the same issues... I expect Skyrim to as well. At this point the biggest Bethesda release coming down the track for me is DaggerXL, a remake of Daggerfall.

4) Torchlight - Some people make an average clicky-clicky game and people act like it's the second coming of Christ. Why didn't Titan Quest get such love? I guess because it didn't run on a laptop and come out at $20. Cheap and easy don't mean good in my vocabulary.

5) Every Call of Duty since 4 - Expansion packs basically, and even judged on that scale they offer very little new to the table. Just pathetic that these are the Avatar of videogames, it makes me weep.

Yes, most of those are recent... I have a short memory span.

Oblivion Vanilla, YES......man that game sucks. I loved the intro and the first area until you escape to the surface, but after that it got kinda boring, plus the fact that I had to go all the way into town before I was ready to and search for a fence for the stolen goods I owned didn't help matters. Plus the omnipresent guards somehow detecting you even if you were pinching a plate in someone's basement......GAH.

I'm with you on all of these except KoToR. It absolutely nailed the look and feel of the Star Wars universe, in a way that really hasn't been seen before. For that, I'm willing to overlook a lot of the shortcomings.

The rest of that list is spot on though, especially the Call of Duty series.

- Monkey Island series: I actually find nr. 3 the best in the series, because of the wonderful graphics (even by today's cartoon standards) and the fantastic humour. It is, as stated above, a special kind of humour, and if you don't appreciate it, you probably don't like the game in general. Nr. 4 was akward (the controls, the looks) but the new episode by Telltale were ok, though they never approached the first three games.

I do agree that Torchlight is overrated a bit. Titan Quest defintely deserved more attention, but it kinda destroyed itself due to the horrible performance issues (but I guess Dibalo II had that as well in the days).
i would i agree torchlight is overrated its almost a demo with repeated levels and cheap items but has good music and promises a better sequel soon

It was indeed a great game, the engine was awesome too it used a kind of depth of field drawing effect to adapt to different video cards, this was unique at the time, you can't actually see this in action any more though because modern hardware is so good.

i really, really love you for saying this. titan quest is my favorite hack n slash of all time and i've played them all. torchlight gets stale fast

I'm sorry, I can't take this post seriously. You can't call a genre overrated, you just don't like the genre. Also, I would argue that Metroid and Mario games aren't even the same genre.

p.s. The game was called Giants: Citizen Kabuto, not "Citizen's Giant: Kabuto" and you can hardly call it overrated considering it didn't sell.
