Because it's not legitimate, and the person/company that produces an intellectual work has the right to own it. I sure wouldn't want to write a novel, and then in 20 years having hacks making terrible fan-fics of it which are now "official", and they're unfairly profiting from my work. And I would have no legal recourse to this.

Yes, in Poland they call lefties 'lewacy', its a pejorative expression. I dont like it, I dont like when people use it. Generally those who use it are basicly narrow minded haters, and hardcore rightists.

But this time I had to use it, as this disrespect for other people's rights really offends me.

Copyrights are no intrinsic right of your creation. Again they are not any form of possession which is deprived from you. It is a time-exclusive dristribution monopole that is in the first place being granted. To protect you from competition.


And on this whole commie calling: Isn't competition as capitalistic as it can get?

For some weird twist of destiny, I have to agree with jamotide for the second time in a fairly short time span. 'Communism' is not an argument against works of art going public domain after a set period of time - ESPECIALLY since we're talking 'after a set period of time'.

I dont even know why I bother, you obviously dont care about peoples rights. I am wondering if you'd be happy if you wrote a book, and someone wrote a sequel without your consent, basicly destroying your IP (by taking it in another direction than the one you wanted).

I am gonna say this: I seriously hope people deprive all of you of your rights. After all, thats what you want to do to others, so it should be mutual, shouldnt it?

This sickens me.

Great, everything should be in the possesion of the public. Fuck the individual, fuck their work, fuck their rights. They dont matter. All that matters is the public.

Welcome to a communist state.
It's about balance, which you seem to be ignoring. You're glossing over the 20-30 years of exclusive profiting we're all talking about. In societies it's often about the balance between individual rights and societal rights. Many of us think the rights of the public for access and preservation of cultural influences takes over after a certain period of time, but the individual right of profiting from their works is still there.

Also: using political positions as insults betrays your bias.

I do wonder, if we go over GoG's catalogue of games 20<+ year games - how many of them gives the profit back to the creators, and how many gives the profit back to right holders?

Does it matter? It would be just a book some other author wrote. If he profits from it depends on the reception by the custormers/readers.

If you want to create your sequel - you can - again nobody prevents you from it. Or are you just afraid that the readers won't be able to differentiate between your works and these "forks".

No, you wouldn't. You'd call a lawyer. No one wants to have their work blatantly stolen, and even worse being profited from.

There's a huge difference between being inspired by things in our culture, society, history, and directly ripping off other people's works. You wouldn't hand in an assignment in University which is a verbatim copy of something someone else wrote.

Do you know what competition is? You create sth new, I create something new thats better than your stuff. Thats competition.

You create sth new, I take your stuff and simply make a new version of it - thats theft.

In my other post I've talked about this. You sign the contract, it is your choice, thats life.

As I've pointed out, you are missing out the situation of indie devs. If you decide to go with your reforms, they are gonna be affected as well, not only these big companies like Activision or EA.

How about we take everything away after 20 years. You buy a house, after 20 years it becomes public domain.
You make a chair, after 20 years its public domain - everybody can just come in and take it.

Yeah, who cares about living persons rights to the stuff they've created. To the fruits of their work.
