Hey guys, we all know that some games here on GOG use DOSBox
I wondered what is in it for the DOSBox team?
So far :
Descent 1+2
MAX
Conquest of the New World
Shattered Steel
Stonekeep
Redneck Rampage Collection
are using DOSBox. I had trouble compiling this list as GOG doesn't really tell you that the game uses DOSBox..
Aside from the forum I could only find a link to DOSBox on the thanks page.
What is GOG giving to them in return for creating something that enables them to sell DOS based games? Since they practically did all the stuff and dos debugging for you and you just sell complete packages. It would be morally right to give them equally valuable in return... Do they at least get a bit % from shares? Or donate some code to dosbox project?

I think saying dos box enables them to sell the games is a bit off. Dos box is available for free download. Gog could just sell the game without it and say you need to get the dos box from its page.

Well, DOSBox is a GPL software, so it doesn't preclude commercial use. Anyway me too would like to have, somewhere, somehow, a complete list of DOSBoxed games. Just for reference and DOSBox team aknowledgement, selling videogames with a FOSS emulator inside them isn't an immoral thing at all....

And Microsoft created Windows which allows companies to sell Windows-based games. Are you suggesting that game companies should give a kick-back to Microsoft?

could it simply increase the visibility of DOSBOX as a great tool, thereby enhancing the community and encouraging more people to donate of their own free will to the developers?

While I never spoke with the developers of DOSbox, if I wonder about their reason to make this emulator, I can only come up with one (well, I can come up with many, but they are not very likely): They'd like to provide people a means of playing old DOS games!
So I would presume, that they happily agreed to lend DOSbox to the GOG team, as they are selling old DOS games for play (along with other games...) .
So I wouldn't think they are offended, though I shouldn't speak in their place.
I agree though, that honoring their hard work, a line could be added to the game's descripion page saying "Powered by DOSbox." or something like that.
Well a staff member or somone else who actually knows how this went could write down the "story" maybe?

Well there are a lot of people here and I'm sure that the developers of DOSbox are fans of old games, so I don't see any reason why they couldn't be here. As for the GOG team, they can ask, if they have the time, even if they do not know. I'm sure they wouldn't want people to get this wrong.
Anyway, we'll see if someone writes here. (:

Not really, one of the main selling points of GOG is that all games
are VISTA compatible. If you remove DOSBox then all those games aren't
Vista compatible anymore

I'm bringing this topic up again as the amount of games that GOG
distributes which use DOSBox continues to rise and I'm interested
wether the DOSBox people will
get some compensation from GOG, mainly because I can't imagine GOG
only taking advantage of them.

Read up about GPL. This same argument happened when Valve started using DOSBox on Steam*.
Basically, there is nothing wrong with it - if the DOSBox team didn't want their software being used in this way, they would not have made it GPL. It really is as simple as that.
They're not being ripped off, they're not being taken advantage of, they're just having their GPL software treated in the way that GPL software is supposed to be treated. If you're against this, you're against GPL.
*for a few hours there actually was a problem, because Valve had left out the licensing info. They fixed this quickly though

So, as frostcircus says, there's no need for anyone, anywhere, anytime, to pay for DOSbox. The creators of DOSbox have basically said you don't have to pay them a penny, and I think their word overrules people who think otherwise.
You can donate some money to DOSbox, if you want, and I have no doubt quite a few have.

Look we don't know who talks to who behind the scenes. We know DOSBOX is free and we also know that one of the guys that created the program had early access to this site.
Do you think if there was an issue on any level, the guys from DOSbox wouldn't talk to the guys from CD Projeckt? And how do we know there isn't compensation of some sort..it doesn't have to be money you know. I dunno how they do it in other countries, but where I live people often do things for a six pack of beer and lunch. That would still be considered compensation, even if money didn't actually exchange hands.
Being as we know nothing about the behind the scenes of this operation, This is pretty much a moot thread. Besides: GOG is actually doing a very moral thing by offering old games for sale again so that people don't have to pirate them to play them.
