My computer just restarted. Just, out of the blue(screen) restarted. I thought I could have had a virus, from what, I have no idea since I'm usually very good at keeping my PC clean, but whatever was the issue I was very worried. The computer rebooted and I went on my web browser and got back to what I was doing, hoping whatever caused that wouldn't cause that again. I use(or have used) the Windows 8.1 preview and not the full thing - I was under the impression you would gain additional features once you upgrade to the full version, but since I never needed it, I didn't use it. So, I just saw this message pop up on my laptop -
"Reinstall Windows Now
-----------------------------------
Your license to use this evaluation version of Windows has expired. Your PC will restart in one hour and will continue to restart every two hours. Get the latest version of Windows to avoid these interruptions."

So, for downloading what I thought to be just a really big update of Windows 8 at the time, as well as you constantly advertising it as a free download on my computer, I have to give more money to Microsoft or deal with this new virus.

...

So, I hear those Macs are looking pretty good. I've also been checking out the PS4, looks like a good idea :)

I know it's not a virus, just being mean :P Anyway, I thought this was a new thing and wasn't on any other version of Windows.
Edit: oh wait i see, you were using the trial version... thought you were upgrading from 8 to 8.1. If that is what you were doing, then you just need to re-activate it.

Ha ha ha! You almost said "penis".
There are no trial versions of Windows. If by trial you mean the Enterprise evaluation version, than it again means that you've been using it against the license terms, as it is only for testing and not day-to-day usage.

Oh, I see that you are using the Preview of 8.1. The Preview is an edition which can be used to do exactly that, preview the next release of Windows, in order to determine whether your hardware and software is compatible with it, and it is not to be used for day-to-day operations. January 15 was the date on which the Preview edition expires, and no longer functions. This expiration date has been known since the Preview was released many months ago.

How is this Microsoft's fault, when you are using what basically is a time-bomb edition?

The Preview is not a 'trial'.

Install 8.1, use your product key, and it will activate successfully.

Or, install 8.0, use your product key to activate, then upgrade to 8.1 through the store, not some beta testing channels that are not for the general public.

That how the preview version of Windows 7 worked too, I don't know about before that. I do know it was not hidden in the "small print" back then. It's not like they're going to let you use their non-free O.S. for free. If you want that then go for Linux. Otherwise just go back to what you used before.

Not really. Trial is a release-ready edition which end users can use to see whether the thing suits their day-to-day needs, use it as they would a non-trial edition, and easily upgrade that trial edition into a permanent one. Preview is not a release-ready edition, it is a frozen build / certain milestone during the development process, and is usually meant only for IT folks and developers, as well as internal and external testers in order to find and report bugs.

EDIT: Bleh, though I guess in a way you are right, he should not have installed that one.

from my impression no OS by microsoft within the last 15 years was release ready when they sold it for full price :P
So I've just searched this in google and found this topic, My father purchased a new computer for me to use in school and had Dell install everything from the OS to to Microsoft Office. I read a post saying it's the OP's fault for installing a trial version, but what if Dell is the reason the wrong version is installed? Especially when the error message starts 6 months after it's purchased. If it's a day to day trial why would it have taken 6 months to ask me to update? I called Dell support and they said the only way to fix the problem is to completely wipe my system clean and reinstall 8.1 full version which should be free. The message only came up once per day so I decided not to do that, but now It's happening a few times a day and is getting pretty annoying. I guess I'll just delete everything in order to use something we already paid for, assuming this isn't actually a virus or something I downloaded, which Dell claimed it probably was.

Any advice that isn't a smart-a$$ remark?
This isn't a smart arse remark, but have you seriously tried calling Microsoft and walking them though the issue?
