I find the definition to be debatable ("1. (of a creative work) referring to itself or to the conventions of its genre; self-referential."), but I would consider the Book of Unwritten Tales to be fairly meta in its dialogue and humor.

It spends a considerable amount of time making fun of computer games and the things most computer game players would find interesting. (RPGs, MMOs, star wars, etc.)

I'm also a big fan of games within games. (which could be an acceptable definition of meta). Some of those are:

Spheda (golf) and fishing in Dark Cloud 2. (fairly robust feature sets as well).
Doom 3 lets you play an arcade game within the game (single clicking, not fun for long).
From what I understand some games let you play entire games from within them (day of the tentacle)

... sort of like world of world of warcraft... have a feeling this will happen ;) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw8gE3lnpLQ)

Yeah, it's just the way I refer to these kind of games, it's hardly a technically correct term :D
Lol, that video :D

I just meant the definition in general. Its too subjective in and of itself. (not yours).
A few games come to mind. First was;
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard

You're a video game character returning in a new video game, but the game code is altered and you have to be hacked into other games to defeat the bad guy.

Alan Wake:

You're a writer trapped in his own novel, but you can't remember writing it.

Assassin's Creed:

You're playing as a genetic memory.
A few others:

Karoshi which is rulebending like hell.
There are also the non-web versions, where some of them are meta in the sense that the Psycho Mantis fight is meta (you need to things outside the game, but not in the trivial I-push-a-button-something-happens way :D)

This - oh my god, this one. Mindblowing puzzles. Thinking literally outside the box.

It's better than that. -- or, well, it could've been better than that. You're playing as a not-awesome RL present-day dude doing a virtual reality thing as a number of awesome historical dudes following a railroaded plot with in-universe saves and replays. If they emphasized this, it could've been the best game ever. If they got rid of the VR metaplot entirely, it could've been good. Unfortunately, the devs went with LOST-grade wet cardboard nonsense crap over either option and topped it off with Uplay.
Also, there's a second Take something literally. More mindfck for everyone, yay :D

Nirth: And what is that?

Mr.Caine: Commentary on violence in video games.
Postal II actually does that very well, imo. The main point is that the game is only as violent as you make it be, you can go through the whole game without hurting a single thing.
weelll... I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for. But Simon The Sorcerer 1 and 2... Especially the second one has some funny things metawise. You just need to play and see what I mean. Brilliant dialogue.
Also The Secret of Monkey islands. How do you know we are pirates? It says so when I point you with mouse pointer :)

Damn you're totally right... I forgot about funny adventure games and their habit of breaking the fourth wall :)
