If you have an Nvidia card and are using Windows 7 then I'd avoid Messiah. MDK is a good game. The sequel is better in a lot of ways (especially controls). But the original is still pretty good.

Vital purchases include Fallout 1 & 2, Giants and MDK2. The Freespace and Descent games are fine examples of their respective genres.
MessiahDK

I've heard some people say that Messiah isn't that good. You may want to look up some reviews and videos of both of them before you decide.
Tough one. Depends on your preference. MDK is generally accepted as a real classic, but you can't depend on that in regards to your taste.

Sacrifice, Giants:CK, KIngpin, Fallout series, Castles, Earthworm Jim1+2, Freespace series, Redneck Rampage and Stonekeep are all considered quite good and should be looked at. Take a quick peek at youtube to see if it would suit you.

This. I've given up playing Messiah due to those issues.

MDK is excellent, I do recommend it.

Also, I'll put in a word for Sacrifice and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Not everyone may like them, but they are so original that everyone ought to at least experience them. Personally, I love them both to bits.

Sacrifice is another game that's very difficult to get running on Nvidia/7/64. But yeah, it's bloody good when it works.
Would you recommand "Die by the sword" ?

The OP's two games shouldn't even be on his/her consideration list if they have not yet played Sacrifice.
I loves Messiah but im a masochist when it comes to vid-ya-games... and i second the orge... Sacrafice is a fun little game

make sure one of them is Redneck Rampage... its such a blast, its funny as all getout and the soundtracks alone are worth it, seriously.... and you get a Machine gun Bra from alien S&M dominatrices (if you like old school FPS)

Kingpin is made very well, honestly i felt it was way ahead of its time and its one of the more grpahically crazy hardcore mobster type games... Russian style mobs not the pasy american mobs :P (again FPS)

Fallouts all of them, no questions about it unless you have them...

IM a sim nut and love space battles so i have the Decents and freepsace games... there fantastic get a cheapo Logitech joystick and go nuts... Xbox360 is great too

But above all else if you love British humor and want to just playin have a great time and laugh your ass off get Giants: Citizen Kabuto! I have a deep reguard for this game and a special place in my heart...

Not unless you like to play with your numpad. The whole thing that is. And that's just for the sword.
This game would be great for a gamepad.

I would, and in fact I think I'm going to buy it myself right now. I used to play it quite a lot in my teens, and although the combat is clunky and I think the story was nothing to write home about, it was still fun to mash critters into bits. Especially with the Ogre on the Arenas.

It really is a good game and definitely better than MDK and Messiah, agreed.

I haven't tried it as I don't have it. But from what you describe it would be perfectly possible to set it up on something like a 360 controller using Xpadder.

I don't have a 360 controller, but someone must try this! For science!

I'm actually interested to know if it works now... and I don't even have the game!

I'll try something first. I don't remember correctly, but it might be that you can also use a mouse. I played the game quite a few years back, and my memory is a bit fuzzy on this front.
The controls were, in any case, quite atrocious anyway, that's why I never played it for long.

Eh, no go, game refuses to cooperate. My main PC is unavailable, so there's no point in trying to get around it.
