The main problem with MDK is the controls. I can't imagine that they played the game before releasing it with those controls.
See, now I'm scared to buy MDK, since controls are rather important for me in a game :s
More so than graphix and storyline ... if the gameplay is broken, it's a no for me.
I do not have MDK, so I cannot comment on that. I have Messiah, and despite the bad reviews I actually kind of like it. However, I suspect most people probably don't, so although I am not familiar with MDK I guess I'll suggest you get it instead.

The controls are bad enough that I've barely played it and you can't reconfigure them in game either as far as I've been able to find. Somebody may have a work around or persevering may be the key, but I found the key arrangement to be ineffectual.
I'd suggest MDK2 rather than MDK, because MDK2 supports mouse-look and has more variety in gameplay due to controlling three different characters instead of just Kurt as in MDK1.

There might be a mod/patch for mouse-look in MDK, but yeah, I'd still say MDK2 is the way to go there.

However, I'd agree with an earlier poster that if you haven't played Sacrifice, that should be the choice.
I actually was planning on buying Sacrifice as one of my 4 purchases...

But a member of the forum posted keys for the game as giveaway so I got mine for free..
I also got fallout for free last week when it was offered by G.O.G , and i'm just a newbie !

I plan on purchasing : Fallout 2 , MDK/Messiah, Die By the Sword and Citizen Kabuto ..
But since I have None of the games in sale this w-e , any suggestion IS welcomed.
And since you recommend MDK2 I might go for it instead, even though it bothers me to play the 2nd without having played the 1st.

Personally I played MDK1 for about 30 mins, got annoyed at the lack of mouse-look, and quit. Then I played MDK2 and rather enjoyed it. I didn't feel like I'd missed anything too important, and I too usually don't like starting mid-series.

I don't know anything about Die By The Word, personally, but I loved Giants and the Fallout games, so I think those are good choices. If you have a joystick and like those kinds of games, I'd say you need to get a Freespace game, but otherwise I think you're set.

Go with MDK2 then. Controls are fine in that one.
