So ya, I asked him. And he was pissed:

What I want for Christmas: For people to understand once and for all that I do not control what happens with Alice. EA does. If writing this statement generated electricity the world's energy problem would be solved. Unfortunately, it does not. So I keep writing it without any sort of impact or result. Fun.

Please ask EA. Thanks and Merry Christmas, New Years, etc!!

A few months back EA joined Good old Games (short GoG)
No wonder he answered that way - no respect for Old from your side. Shame on you.

Tantrix: Man, what a douche
Not so much a douche as he's just lazy about working for his fans, and figures it's ok to just pawn off the same lines over and over again to those who ask him stuff. Then he wonders why people get upset with his answers.....it makes me laugh when he gets upset in return though. I wonder if he's seriously dense or not?

Ok, maybe that does make him a bit of a douche.

Also how big of an ego do you need to name yourself American? *rolleyes*

Sounds like he gets asked that sort of question a lot.

Agreed. But still, I think he should use whatever pull he has with EA/etc to get these games out to us. It'd be a nice move on his part at any rate and be alot better than a canned reply.

Even if he failed people would respect him for trying.

Ultimately he did answer the question: ask EA. So, he could have answered it better, but I think the question itself should have been worded better.

Well, I probably have to take that "douche" part off if you read his other answers
Getting the development deal done. This process alone took over 12 months. Meanwhile Spicy Horse was running out of time and money as we neared the end of development on Grimm. At one point during the process the entire deal was killed - along with a handful of other randomly selected titles at EA (budget crisis time for EA). When it was done, the deal stood nearly a foot tall (printed, stacked). It took a literal army of lawyers, bankers, insurance people, EA producers, outside auditors, agents in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Cayman Islands, and more... to get the thing done. It was insane. And I seriously doubt another financing deal for game development will ever be that complex.

and regarding getting the rights from EA back
Simply not possible. EA doesn't sell its valuable IPs to other companies. Imagine how they'd look/feel if someone ran off and made a fortune with something they'd sold away. Nope. Does not happen.

Looks pretty kafkaesque for him.
Who is he (American)? The developer?

wormholewizards: Who is he (American)? The developer?
The creator of Alice, he was working with ID on the Doom series. For some reason he switched over to EA when he started to make Alice.

That's a development deal he was involved in I'm talking about him simply pushing for EA to release Alice on Gog/etc. It shouldn't be so bloody hard to make a few phone calls and it would garner him some love from the fans for the effort.

And I wasn't suggesting he try getting the rights back, but AGAIN just pushing for EA to release Alice. Just a few emails/letters/phone calls.

Call me douche as well if you must, but wasn't that a fairly reasonable response from the man? He could've worded it a bit better, I suppose, but feigning enthusiasm and love for the fans would be worse, in my opinion. Getting the same questions over and over again is not fun, believe me.

Who said anything about feigning? Shouldn't he care about his fans for real? Otherwise why be in the business?

Thing is he could at least make an attempt to get the game released somewhere and it'd be appreciated if he failed or succeeded....but he won't make the attempt because he's a lazy arse.
So you guys get responds from game devs? How fun..

No developer has ever responded to me. No one. That has lead me to the conclusion, that I'm a low-life human being, not worthy of any communication.

On-topic:

He didn't seem that pissed, but you can definitely see some frustration :) Maybe he gets asked that question a lot :)
