How is Oculus "the leader in virtual reality technology" when their one and only product so far has not yet even been released? Are they the de-facto leader because there is no one else making VR helmets?

Yes, Valve is making their own VR kit.

I think it's a smart acquisition by them. The applications are endless and they need something fresh. ^^

Of course it's mostly buzz words. But they still have managed to bring the technology much further than what it was before. But that is mostly because the development in VR devices was pretty much in stand still for years after the failed experiments in the 90's.

What I've seen every serious attempt at this moment will be very close to Oculus or at the same level. Hell, there's even some VR systems you can try with your cell phone and if the resolution of the device is good enough it's light years above what those clunky low resolution devices were.

My brother tinkered his own rig from the blueprints available from Durovis and the system worked surprisingly well. The better phone you got the nicer the result will be, of course, the little I tested it I didn't notice any eye strain or the like.

It's more of a gimmick at the moment than anything else and I'm not convinced the user base really exists to make this purchase interesting. But only time will tell I suppose.

This, this is surreal. Instagram and whatsapp I coud get my head around, but a VR tech hardware company?? FB immense strength is in software, not hardware.

I had hoped to buy the thing once it was fully user ready, but thinking of all the ways FB will turn the extremely promising product into utter shit, sony's VR headset looks like the better option.

Purchase of whatsapp was for the user base i would guess :/., Latest updates are forced, certain options not working, although they added a useless privacy option(in this case). Why cant they just leave things alone???. And latest facebook messenger forces you apparently to link mobile number to it (im keeping multiple backups of the older versions ). I dont understand the reason behind latest purchase except maybe on the whim of Mr Zuckerberg. This is coming from a regular facebook user (notice...not a fan as much)

Well, so much for my interest in Oculus VR products... No way I'll ever put a cent in a Facebook-related company.

Not that I hate Facebook, I have an account, but I'm mostly concerned by privacy questions.

And frankly, so far I've survived without VR, so...

But this is a shock. If the news was : "Valve/Microsoft/Apple/Sony/Nintendo/Intel has bought Oculus VR", it would have made sense. But Facebook? No, just... no.
