Got a laser printer made by Lexmark. I'd got with these guys because their printers know at least PCL6 or Postcript or both. That means that you do not need a special driver for them, they work on any OS. They also have their own CPUs and RAM

Stay away from anything that says GDI, host based.... err basically anything that does not say at least PCL6 and/or Postscript. Unless you do a shitload of printing to justify it, don't buy inkjets and by this I mean inkjets that can be fitted with CISS systems. Also, if you don't print a lot with these things they clog. Messy little things.

I've discarded the idea of inkjets already. I need to check out what a "laserjet" is / means. The other stuff you describe doesn't make an awful lot of sense to me tbh :) Still quite a lot of researching to do it seems ...
I don't have access to a company printer, otherwise I'm sure that would be the best solution.

"LaserJet" is a series of laser printers made by HP. It's a marketing name and there are no "jets" of course :) Some earlier models like the LaserJet 1100 may still be in service today. Those things were really, really, really good.

Thanks. I had actually pretty much written off Hewlett Packard so maybe I'll have to reconsider. Another worry I have is how long inks / toners remain available for discontinued models. It would not be much fun to buy a printer only to discover you can no longer get ink / toner for it.

It seems that there is more money in the ink / toner industry than there is in the printer industry. There are dozens and dozens of discontinued models (what a waste !) available on Amazon, though it's not always immediately apparent whether cartridges are still available for them.

I'm interested to know what's so special about the laserjet. The 1100 is only mono and doesn't seem that quick (not that speed would matter that much to me). Is it just to do with the print quality or the running costs, or both ... or something else ?


Ha ha ha. I just read his "story", not the whole thread. He must have had a lot of spare time on his hands to think that yarn up. I think I would have been enough of a sucker to believe it too. The chances of my ending up in his situation are about zero anyway so it looks like I'll have to actually buy a printer ..... just like he did :D

This rep system is a bit daft imo : you get uprepped mainly for posting something every new day and can get downrepped either because someone doesn't like you for some unknown reason, or because they misunderstood your post in some way, or simply don't share the same sense of humour.
