Who played this back when it was new?

I never played it. Never really looked into it at all, actually. But I'm curious if it's worth a look someday. Oddly enough, you can still get it NEW on PS2 as a greatest hits for $12.48 on Amazon . I also know there was a sequel which doesn't seem to be as highly rated.

Being under Rockstar's Banner not sure if it'll come here any time soon, but not impossible in the long-term. There was a PC port after all.
I didn't play it. But it did get a LOT of controversy however. Pretty sure 1 or 2 was rated A for Adults (not sure which one though...)

Worth a look? Yes.
Good game? Not really.
It's really all about the little murder animations, the gamplay itself is really basic and repetitive.
The murder animations do make it interesting enough to give it a go though, just don't expect it to change your life.
I found it to be dull and a bit disturbing at the same time. Pretty much the entire first level is about learning how to sneak up on people and suffocate them with bags, beating them in the face optional, so that you don't have to fist fight with them.
It's Rockstar's usual schtick. Mediocre game with bland gameplay and some controversial aspects, to create some marketing buzz and to make the kids think that it would somehow be "cool" to have it.
Yeah, Manhunt 2 had to be edited down to even be released
"Originally scheduled for North American and European release in July, the game was suspended by Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive when it was refused classification in the United Kingdom, Italy and Ireland, and given an Adults Only (AO) rating in the United States.[3] As neither Sony, Microsoft nor Nintendo allow AO titles on their systems, this effectively meant the game would have been banned in the US.[4] In response to these ratings problems, Rockstar edited the game, blurring the screen during the game's executions and removing the scoring system, where players were awarded for particularly brutal killings.[5] This edited version was given an M rating in the US by the ESRB and was released on October 29.[1][6] However, the BBFC still refused to classify the edited version for UK release. Rockstar appealed their decision, and ultimately, the Video Appeals Committee voted that the game could be released with an 18 cert.[7]
Manhunt 2 garnered controversy before and after its release, getting the attention of Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, anti-videogame activist Jack Thompson, and various US Senators. Reception of the game were largely mixed. Reviewers praised the improved gameplay and twisted storyline, while criticizing its outdated graphics and engine. It was ranked at #1 in Gameranx' list of the "Top 25 Goriest Games of all Time",[8] and was nominated for GameSpy's 2007 Game of the Year Award for the PS2."

Steam sell Manhunt 1 but not 2 (not HERE anyway - I would be interested to know if any other territories get it...)

Fever_Discordia:
Allegedly you can actually still get #2 (in the UK) direct from Rockstar on hardcopy.

I played the first and enjoyed the straight to video 80s b-movie feel. Actually had a pretty decent atmosphere in game, and yes - it was meant to be sickening / disturbing.

Steam here only sells Manhunt
I have it for PC and I would say it is worth a look.

It involves sneaking around in the shadows and gruesomely executing members of various gangs and organizations. I enjoyed the gameplay, and the story isn't too bad either. This Starkweather fellow tells you what to do and where to go, all the while videotaping it all for his snuff films. There are a few interesting chapters, and they are all scored from 1 to 5 stars, so it adds to replayability if you're into 5-starring every level (which also unlocks cheats and bonus levels.) There are a few bosses, most notably a pig with a chainsaw named Piggsy. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it, still fire it up every now and then, although I haven't played it recently.

I also enjoyed Manhunt 2 (got it for PC from Amazon), its pretty much more of the same, but it also is darker and more brutal in almost every way.
I played it on PC when it came out, and it was probably the most boring game I had ever played. And it is certainly the worst game I've ever payed over 50€ for. The gameplay is extremely repetitive, it's just "sneak behind an opponent, press a button, watch a cut-scene", over and over again. Unless animated violence gives you a hard-on, there's really no reason to play Manhunt.

That is actually a pretty good description but I must begrudgingly admit that I fit the "animated violence gives you a hard-on" faction so if GOG had it I'd get it. I recommend it in small doses because even for someone as easily amused as me, it is still very repetitive.

Yeah, it's kind of creepy and evil... And from what I recall (bought it for my son - bad Momo!), the game play wasn't all that great. It was a waste of like $40 at the time...
It's the typical gritty 90s style video game. With all the brutality, blood and gore. Okay game, shock value aside.
Played it at release (I think it was banned after I bought it), I thought it was pretty crap, I know I didnt finish it, I think I just got fed up with it, actually I think I still have it. There was another game back then was heading into "gritty" territory, I think it was called The Getaway, that was pretty good iirc, something to keep an eye out for if you like those type of games.
it wasn't that bad, it wasn't anything amazing either. I beat both games and they both made me feel sort of uncomfortable after playing too much. The second one had a more interesting story. The first one's final boss was pretty awesome, if you had the patience to get that far.
