This video rental store I go to for renting video games and moves called Video Ave. is going to close down. And its such a bummer because I have been going in that store for more than a decade. Its without them I would never have seen movies like Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Godfather, Dog Day Afternoon, The first 3 seasons of Game of Thrones and much, much more movies and I always go there to try out new games. Hell this Rental store was still around long after Blockbuster went bankrupt.

Man I hate to say this, but sometimes fuck the internet, fuck netflix, amazon, gamefly, etc.

Heck I felt this way about Borders aswell, fuck Kindle and reading Comics books from web-browers :P

I am sorry for saying this, but I am really going to miss retail shops sometimes. It's much more simpler to just buy something from a store and go home. Retaliers don;t ask for you personal information or accountability, they just want your money, plain and simple.

I know I am going to get flak for saying this, but this is just me in the moment and I know there is some hypocracy in my words, if it was not for the internet I would never have GOG and play these classic PC games I have been missing in my life. But still has that ever happen to you where your favorite store you go to was closed down because it could not keep up with the internet? It really suck when that happens :(

It's an impressive feat that they managed to survive the last 10 years. I certainly get a little moist in the ocular regions when a good indie brick and mortar goes under. There's something about having a local mom and pop that the internet will never be able to replicate, GOG comes about as close as possible though.
Shopping on the internet can be great, better prices, you can find a better selection etc etc, but regular stores definitely have their place. I found a small video game chain that still sells used games for consoles that have long since become outdated and was able to buy Bushido Blade there. Yeah you could say that I could have bought it online, but there is just something cool about walking into a store and finding stuff like that, that the internet can't fully replicate.
Oh I agree totally. I have fond memories of renting games and movies and such when I was a teenager, I would have missed out on a lot had I not had the option to do so. It sucks in some ways that we're moved towards a consumer model where such a franchise will struggle to exist based on renting alone, though I do appreciate the benefits of the current model we have as well.

I guess maybe eventually some bigger chains could offer rental services as an aside to their current standing business model, as a niche service.

Earlier I seem to recall them as being around as early as 2000, I know this because I remember the time they still have VHS tapes and probably earlier, but I don't know because I was too young to remember.

Goddamn it my only access to test out new games is gone, and I really do not want to use Gamefly. I don't buy that whole. "You can keep the game as long as you want" in the adverisment. If I can keep it for as long as I want I might aswell buy it official from Gamestop :P

You want to know whats even more sad, My Store had the Godfather Trilogy, in Blu-Ray and the Coppola Restoration. Also had The Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut. And it had Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 in Blu-Ray ::(

Perhaps its death Ironicallly will force me to use Amazon and buy physical books, movies, and certain games. Shit now I really need to get a job soon and I don't know what Opportunities are in my Island.

We had two in my town. When the independent store went out of business, what do you know, the franchise raised its prices. Bastards.
Very sorry for your loss.

Our local store went out of business a good 15 years ago when Blockbuster came to town. Even Blockbuster went down about 6 years back but I never bothered going there. The indie store was your stereotypical mom and pop with great titles and customer service. Anyway, always sad to hear about another going.

Here is a picture of the actual store I go to:

Indeed, in this day and age if you want to stay in that business you have to offer something special. All of the video rental places that we went to when I was a kid have been out of business for years.

There's another one in the neighborhood that's likely to be there for quite some time because they always specialized in niche films. Because of that they have a much more loyal clientèle as well as less competition from Netflix and other online sources. I'd be surprised if a large portion of their catalog wasn't even available online. They're also a great source for recommendations on movies that you've probably never even heard of.
I felt the same when Borders closed down (still feel like nothing good about that). I would have felt like that about Blockbuster, but on my last trip they charged me more than the sticker prices so I don't feel bad for them. Bummer, though, on your and their part. Although, I've never been big on renting and much prefer to purchase things. I still feel your pain.
Try living 50 miles from the nearest store. :P

Ah you totally reminded me of this place:

http://www.iluvvideo.com/

the awesome starts with free beer tuesdays and just keeps flowing unrelentingly from there. makes me miss austin.
I can sympathize with that. =(

So far the only good place where I'm at that has a decent collection of used stuff like movies and older video games (besides GameStop for games, which I hardly ever go to unless they happen to have something) is Slackers. There were a few other places, but lo and behold a lot of them went out of business (or possibly moved out of the area, don't really know for sure). Amazon still has retail products, but in all honesty I see that dying in a few years (with all the digital craze going on).

Capitalism = survival of the fittest. The internet, Netflix, Amazon, Gamefly, Kindle have bigger and sharper teeth compared to Video Ave. Look at what Walmart did to most of the stores in the USA...

We are going backwards with DRM Digital its like before VHS you only watch movies in theaters and thats it and its rare if they do reshows where the movie is popular enough that they play it in Theaters again. In all digital age is bringing that back all because of the add benefit that its conviniant.
