funniest scene in the movie :D (rewind to around 1:00)

I saw it a couple of days ago. It was probably my favorite Superman movie and I really liked the way it showed him struggling with managing his senses when he was a kid.

I also really liked the work that was done for Zod.
Just finally got around to seeing it in 2D in a cinema two fucking hours away, spoilers ahoy (i.e. don't read if you haven't seen the film and intend to)...

*******************************************************************************************************

The way the story jumps around between flashbacks is a little jarring, and very Nolan-like (Batman Begins says hi), but most of the flashbacks actually do relate closely to things that have just happened in the story (as they did in Batman Begins), and it works very well.

Henry Cavill makes for a great Superman. I only saw it in German, so I can't speak for his accent or vocal performance, but the physicality of it he's mastered beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Zod was an awesome villain, and well beyond Terence Stamp's portrayal in 1980. That's not to diss Terence Stamp's cult "kneel before Zod"; but let's face it - it's too camp to be taken seriously nowadays. Man of Steel's Zod is the quintessential racial supremacist - unswervingly loyal to his cause and his race, and uncompromisingly unhinged when his plans turn to shit.

Those who said that the film was completely humourless were wrong - there is a handful of decent gags in there, with the satellite one being particularly hilarious.

Colonel Hardy is one of those characters who seems quite unassuming at first, but has some awesome scenes and a great send-off.

Faora is one bad motherfucker, but contrary to all this business with the objectivisation of women in film nowadays, she basically seems to be a male warrior with tits. Ayelet Zurer's portrayal of Lara - however brief - served the idea of a strong female character much better (by the way, Faora was portrayed by German actress Antje Traue, and from what I could tell, she did her own dub).

Contrary to apparently popular opinion, I loved the ending. Many people have been arguing that Superman ALWAYS finds a solution without killing anyone. Of course he does - he rotates the earth backwards to turn back time, kisses Lois Lane to make her forget her knowledge of Clark's real identity, and rebuilds the Great Wall of China by looking at it. Past Superman films have never really presented Superman with a real moral dilemma (in fact, pre-Crisis books never did either) and have taken cheap ways out of solving such dilemmas. Man of Steel was the first film to actually present Superman with two evils, force him to choose the lesser evil, and live with its consequences.

Negatives?

Lois Lane is kinda bland. It's good to see her acting with a bit of initative as opposed to being "rescue me" Superman bait, but she seems to be devoid of any real personality.

The tornado scene was just fucking ridiculous and portrayed Jonathan Kent more as a domineering patriarch than as a role model. It didn't help that Martha Kent seems to be shying away like some battered wife in every scene.

The editing was a little too quick for my taste. It's been reported that there will be an extended edition (the cinema edition is Zack Synder's director's cut) so I'm curious to see if that will handle pacing matters a little better. The film could have certainly devoted more time to building up a relationship between Zod and Superman, and more time to building up the relationship between Clark and Pa Kent. Some background to the oil rig scene wouldn't have gone amiss either.
I saw it earlier this week. I'd give it a 4/10. It's definitely not the best superhero movie out there, especially if you're not into guys. I watched it with a bunch of single girls, two of whom bought multiple tickets just to see Superman topless and on fire near the start. The story jumps around a whole lot, which made it hard to follow, and the camera was really shaky the whole time, which gave me a headache.

Only go to see this one if you really like guys and can't find a boyfriend. Otherwise, just wait for one of your friends to get the DVD/Blu-Ray. You know one of them probably will, and then you'll be able to see it without wasting ten dollars. In five years, the disc'll probably be worth about that.

Elmofongo: Even I called bullshit on the fact that no one died in the Avengers, I will say though is the soundtrack generic?

Because Hans Zimmer is known for not making memorable music.

keeveek: I don't remember any themes, so that is probably your answer :P
Well I saw the movie and its a LOT better than the Dark Knight Rises, and actually I thought it was gonna be depressing dark, nope just serious.

Also I thought people said Superman did more damage than good and he destroyed all of Metropolis, actually it was already fucked before he arrived thanks to the Reaper-looking machine (yes I said it, the "World Maker" thing whatever its name was looked like the reapers in Mass Effect)

I personally hope the sequal will be better, like Dark Knight better. I personally hope the next villian is either Braniac or Darkseid or Doomsday.

PLEASE NO LEX LUTHOR!!!

Doomsday isn't strong enough to carry a film, but he would work if you teamed him up with Braniac.

Superboy Prime is one, but than they have to establish a parallel world :P
The movie is amazing, what Superman fans have been waiting for and finally deserve.
I just got back from the theater where I gorged on Zack Snyder's sumptuous new feast of a film - "Jesus of Krypton"

Of course we all know the tragic story of how Snyder took ill two thirds of the way through the movie and Michael Bay had to step in and direct the last third.

I have to say... I haven't been this disappointed in a movie in a long long time. For something that had so many exceptional component parts, the end result was nothing short of a clusterfuck.
What bothered me about the movie was that for someone who's all about saving other people, Superman never seemed to be bothered by the fact that a lot of innocent civilians were probably killed during hist DBZ-esque fights with the Kryptonians. Still, I enjoyed the movie, and will probably watch a sequel if there is one.

Indeed. That's what people seem to forget - that Metropolis was already in a pretty shit state by the time he got around to doing anything about it. I don't know what those things were called either (the German dub called them "Weltenwandler" - "world converters") but they were certainly responsible for the largest part of the carnage.

But it's clearly shown in some cases that he jumps into a building where are people inside. And he always fall somewhere between them, never hurting anybody. It's kinda cliche for superhero movies and really tiring sometimes, but I understand why they won't show supes body kills somebody by accident.

Well, not so much 'jumps' as he is usually thrown or punched into said building.

One exception - when he goes wild on Zod in Smallville for showing up at the Kent Farm. That did come across as a little callous. Especially in the way he took out that 7/11, and also in his revelling in Zod's pain ("it hurts, doesn't it?"), but I found that this was rather consistent with how they built up Clark's character. If someone had threatened my mother, I'd be happy that they were suffering as well, even though I'd know it was wrong to do so.

Yeah, he seems sometimes careless about other people's property and lives, but let's be honest - it's not 1960s anymore. If there is somebody with such great power, and, noteably, he uses his limits for the first time in his life, there will be collateral damage.

And they weren't afraid of showing people dying on screen (although they were mostly soldiers), again, unlike the Avengers, where cars flying around, shit exploiding, buildings collapsing, and nobody dies.

Bingo. That's the point I think they were trying to get across. Superman is still new at this superhero gig, and keeping collateral damage to a minimum is not easy when you have an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. He could certainly have tried to keep the damage to a minimum, but if he had done that, he probably wouldn't have lasted five minutes against Zod and Faora.
