InfraSuperman: Apparently, the German versions of Mad TV and Mad TV 2 were released as freeware in 2001. They can be found on several completely legal sites for download.
Interesting fact is that I could never find a proof that Mad TV really was made freeware in 2001. No problem for Mad TV 2 which was clearly declared as freeware by Greenwood (together with a bunch of other games). Mad TV was made by Rainbow Arts though that ceased to exist years ago. I even wrote to THQ (the company that owned the rights after 1999) once to get confirmation about the legal status of MAD TV, but never got an answer.
My theory is that Mad TV never was made freeware, but no one cared for the rights any longer. People simply assumed that it was freeware after the sequel was released that way and no one ever denied it. Then one web site (couldn't find out which one was the first) wrote that it was freeware and one after another took over the information.
In my eyes it's a modern internet legend (an interesting though) and the game in fact abandonware instead of freeware, untill anyone can show me a proof (German Wikipedia entry doesn't count, it was edited to freeware years later).
