Smannesman: What Game Made You Afraid of the Dark?

I have to admit, I'm drawing a blank.
It could be something about the Dark Side, but that's not one specific game.
It could be about Night Shift.. but that's not scary.
Star Wars Dark Forces?

Sogi-Ya: doom 3 ... till I got the ductape mod.

humm ... Doom makes me think of ID, and ID makes me thing of ZeniMax: Could TES and other related bethsoft titles fit with these clues? ZeniMax owns quite a few subsidiary developers now.
I think Doom 3 stopped being scary after the third or fourth monster-closet-conveniently-placed-next-to-an-armour-power-up. After that it just got annoyingly predictable.
I really dont get the excitement in this thread.

As stated previously - the star wars shooters and all that is already on steam if that is your bag.

The adventure games, while excellent, already play perfectly on ScummVM. Some of those adventure games are also available on steam.

So the addition of LA to this site really only addresses two things.

1 - people who don't own copies of the LA adventure games, don't want to use eBay, or for whatever reason just can not obtain an original copy to use with scummvm.

2 - the one or two games like Grim Fandango and Escape from monkey island that do not have a reliable way to run on modern hardware (the residual project is ridiculously slow). Although the GoG guys are not miracle workers and can't just suddenly make these older games work - and if no one else has found a sure fire way to get Grim Fandango running on modern hardware, I'd be surprised if they suddenly figure it out.

I know I have read about games in the past they got rights to but could not get running reliably.

I have to agree with others that a larger company would be preferred for myself.

Have you actually priced out any of those games lately? Some of them like X-Wing are getting hard to find as more and more disks go bad. I know this because I tried to read my friends X-Wing disks for him with my floppy and 3 out of 5 were bad.

I'm not sure what the cost of the LA games are right now, but I've found a lot of games, even newer ones, that are going for obscene amounts of money.

Plus, that supply really isn't sufficient to cover demand, I'm guessing there's a lot of people that are like me and unwilling to shell out that sort of money for old games.
Your right, I don't know the current prices as I own those games and have no need to buy them. i am surprised however that they are expensive.

I'm not saying having LA would be useless. I'm just saying that it only addresses a niche group of games. And I don't personally feel it is worth being that excited about.

I was a bit confused because I could have sworn that Alone in the Dark was up last night when I was checking to see if that might be what they were hinting.
That was a cruel, cruel joke, GOG.

They already had one of them, they just added the other two.

Agreed. I wanted to buy Curse Of Monkey Island a while ago and some were $79.00. While that may be ok for those living in the US, I stay in South Africa and with exchange & shipping, it'll cost me a fortune, so I'm gonna say I'm dissapointed that it's not LA. And for those about to reply and tell me to get it on Steam, I don't want it on Steam, I want it on GOG!

I'm also having a hard time trying to understand the hype that's been going on for the last few days, just to find out it's Witcher and Atari. I'm not gonna be hauling out my Credit Card anytime soon for any of those games.

Also, I'm pretty sure GOG team, members saw this thread and the excitement folks had for LA and EA and were laughing, not realizing that this is serious to some of us. I dunno, I've been loyal but perhaps I need to start checking out Direct2Drive, Steam etc..... seems they are getting the deals.

While I am aware that they did make some sort of obscure press release about EA, LA, Take 2 etc coming, I'm just not into the whole mystery thing, just release the games and people will start buying them, simple business really. I'm not a child, I don't like being treated like one"ooh, there are some great presents under the tree, but you can't open them yet"

Look before I get hate mail. I've always liked and preferred GOG, but come on......

It seems though that all hope is not lost for a new publisher, in the summary article the last paragraph says:
But that's not all! At the very end, spotlight was on your favourite French Monk, who had some news regarding new publishers coming to the site. Microsoft, Electronic Arts, LucasArts, Take2 and SquareEnix - one of those publishers is already signed, while two more from the list are almost on board! Which and when is coming? Well, you'll have to wait a bit for that :)
So they have one of those publishers, and two more of them almost. They just aren't telling us yet.

I'm guessing the three are going to be EA, LucasArts and Squeenix. I can't see how MS would agree to GOG's standards and Take2... honestly, it was a toss up between them and Squeenix, Take 2 lost, but it really could go either way.
