sheepdragon: I wonder if I can use my discs with the Steam version, because if that is possible, my willpower might buckle enough to buy it from there.

This guy claims that you can.

TheCheese33: JK/MotS is working fine for me. I'm running 7 64-bit.

sheepdragon: Wait, wait, wait... the Steam version works? Holy hell...
Well, I guess they had to do something, because I can only barely make the retail version work in the 32-bit version of either Vista or 7. I wonder if I can use my discs with the Steam version, because if that is possible, my willpower might buckle enough to buy it from there.

Weclock: how about this... just pirate the old games, they didn't have drm..
avatar
Zellio2009: No, they do (In the forms of viruses and trojans depending on where you get them).

Zellio2009: As long as you're not a total, immense and completely dense noob, finding stuff without viruses is easier than finding good legal alternatives.

Even the best people can get shit from abandonware. That's why I don't download it anymore, esp. after home of the underdogs closed....
For those getting Jedi Knight I suggest you check out this modding site : http://www.jkhub.net/
Lots of great tools and mods there.
I recommend Jedi Knight Enhanced, it enhances the models and textures of the game.
In order for it to work you will also need the Unofficial Patches, though it requires an unpatched v1.0 retail executable of the game (in theory!). So I've no Idea if this will work with the STEAM version. If anyone can check...
JKLauncher is also a handy tool, with it you can manage your mods and take part/host a multiplayer game.

Konradical: 9.99$ for all,
4.99$ individually
Two Indy games.
Loom.
The Dig.
It seems like they not only noticed GoG, but they're not messing around, and are quite plainly trying to undercut them. This is getting very interesting if you ask me, I wonder if it means we won't see those game on here though. :\
Edit: Not only that, but the entire Jedi Knight series is there too. This is prime GoG material! Are we worried?

Believe me, Steam has noticed GOG. I've had enough posts deleted just for mentioning that GOG exists.
While I do think that Steam is trying to undercut GOG, this isn't direct competition. Like I mentioned in another Lucasarts thread. I really doubt GOG will be getting any Lucasarts games soon, if ever. It seems to me that Lucasarts likes DRM in their games, and GOG's model is not for them. Why else would they release old games on other services and not the one that is well known for and specializes in older games?
it's dumb that they didn't at least fix the music... it can't be hard to either move the music to a different folder or include some form of virtual mounted CD.
I heard that lucasarts LOST the source code to JK
:-o
Which means they can't fix anything as far as graphics go. sigh.
It seems to be pot luck, a few recent cards work, most don't.
The official advice seems to be to run in software mode... but i remember that even at the time of release the software mode looked like crap.
I'd just bought a graphics card (3dfx?) and my friend played it on my PC and loved it. then he bought it for his PC (with no graphics card) and it looked like a totally different game (like Dark Forces TBH...)
I'd recommend hanging on a while before buying and seeing if any fixes appear.
How the hell can you LOSE SOURCE CODE?

michaelleung: How the hell can you LOSE SOURCE CODE?

Because they are idiots and tried to hide the fact they made anything before 2000?

michaelleung: How the hell can you LOSE SOURCE CODE?

By not giving a damn.
Although Lucasarts may not be alone with that. I heard that Sega lost the source code to the Saturn RPG, Panzer Dragoon Saga.

Why? Those were the good days of Lucasarts.

Lucasarts seem to think good = Star Wars. We are only getting Monkey Island and a few others. There are still a great many Lucasarts games that have been forgotten. Even now they gave us a handful of adventures and then another glut of Star Wars.

Apparently Red Baron's source code has gone awol as well. And Duke Nukem Forever
Ha! As if there was ever CODE from that

It makes sense. It's their strongest IP. I'm expecting Grim Fandango around Brutal Legend. I'd do that. It would basically be piggybacking marketing. You'd just have to get a videogame mag to do a Schaeffer puff piece, a la what's happened with Cryptic's back catalogue of late.
I actually think they've been doing a good job. Monkey Island was a pretty big release, and honestly they're not shoveling out just any game, even if I'd prefer Grim Fandango and DoTT ASAP, like many old-school fans. I don't begrudge them trying to make money.
I'm probably buying the Jedi Knight bundle. I never played most of the games when they came out - my PC wasn't good enough.
LOL, DNF code. Do you have a link?

This is Lucasarts, AKA George Lucas. The same guy who made the Star Wars trilogy, then made the Phantom Menace......
Speaking of competition for GoG - MDK 1 and 2 just turned up on there.

Commercial software can ship with viruses and trojans too. Isn't computing fun? :-)
