No mention of Apocalypse Zero (a.k.a. Kakugo no Susume)? FAIL. I wouldn't call it a good OVA, but I would definitely call it violent.
Also, to everyone that speaks about "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" I would advice to check the video game.
Genocyber.

Let that roll over your tongue and you'll know what you are into.

P1na: You should read Yotsuba! to break your stereotypes.
And K-ON!, Sgt. Frog, Oh My Goddess, Oreimo, Azumanga Daioh, Digi Charat, Hetalia, Chii's Sweet Home, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan, and a host of others.

Sure there are tons, but I thought a manga about the life of a 5 year old girl whose big adventure is going to the shop in the corner to buy some food was a particularly good way to break any "bloody and violent" stereotipes. Chii's sweet home would work, too.

That made me remember "Majo no takkyūbin (Kiki´s delivery service)", so easy going quotidian life portrayal.

Anyways, I wonder if "Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro Chan" gets into the list".

Hellsing, in a goofy, hilarious way (everybody contains 670 litres of blood and explode whenever they're bored).
Kurozuka
Gantz - this one tops all the rest I've seen for the gore factor, though I don't intentionally seek out this type of stuff

Berserk
Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal
Ninja Scroll

Are Berserk and Samurai X considered ultraviolent? I've seen very little anime as I said in my first post, and those two are among the only few that I have seen, but I enjoyed them both immensely. I recall them being fairly bloody but don't know how they compare to other anime.
End of Evangelion
Or as I like to call it, Anno's little temper tantrum on a bad day.

Also, Genocyber, Violence Jack, Rise of the Overfiend, Mezzo Forte and Kite.
Oh, and my personal favorite, Hellsing Ultimate.

Wicked City

You'll think twice about having sex with a woman you pick up in a bar after seeing this...
I'm going to second what people have said about Hellsing (make SURE you watch the OVA's dubbed-it's worth it and the violence is pretty gruesome as well as Deadman Wonderland (bullets made of blood. Need I say more?

I wish I was joking but it REALLY is there in the anime. I said all I could without spoiling
Eh, I'm fine with bullets made of blood.
The question is though, does he use his own blood, or the blood of his enemies? Because using your own blood is kinda dumb.
